Most people struggle with writing a resume and considering the fact that most employers don’t read all the way through a resume makes it an even more daunting task. While you may be tempted to write down silly stuff because you are sure that your resume won’t be read through from start to finish, you should restrain yourself and concentrate on writing a resume that will get you the job that you want! If you get too wordy you may be shooting yourself in the foot as employers want to spend as little time reviewing resumes as possible.
The first thing you should do is to be sure that your name and contact information is very clear at the top of your resume. Next, you need to state a clear objective. Before mailing, handing in, or faxing a resume you should be certain that your objective relates to the job that you are applying for. Employers usually won’t give an individual a second thought if they have used an objective that simply does not apply to the position that needs to be filled. Next, you need to list your job experience starting with the most recent. Most employers are more interested in where you are now as opposed to where you have been in the past. While an employment history is important, your most recent job will be the most telling when trying to determine if you are qualified for the job.
You usually need to go back with your employment history five to 10 years, anything more than that is simply wasting paper! You can also list your education, but many employers aren’t interested in anything other than college degrees and special certifications.
