The Do's and Don't of Asking for a Raise

Feeling overworked and underpaid? If you're starting to feel like you deserve a raise, here are eight DO's and DON'Ts to build your confidence and tact (and what to avoid!) in asking for the salary you feel you deserve.

DO

1. Devise a "Plan of Action". First and foremost, get a strategy together. Make a note of the specific projects you've undertaken and the results you've accomplished. List all of your job skills and the features that make you an asset to this company. Find out what a typical raise is for someone with your experience in your area of occupation. Know the facts and be realistic in your request.

2. Ask for an amount that's slightly higher than one you would be happy with. If you would be happy with a 5% raise, ask for one a couple of points above it. That way, if your boss starts to negotiate, you won't feel as if your worth has been diluted any by getting less than what you feel you deserve.

3. Remember, your boss shouldn't be the only one negotiating. If your company is going through a slow period or the economy is down, try to be flexible and know how to respond if your boss suggests a lower amount than what you may have been expecting. Consider other ways of getting a raise too, such as additional vacation time, employee perks or more time off. All of these can be just as good (if not better!) than an actual amount of money.

4. Choose a specific day and time to meet with your supervisor about your raise request. Avoid choosing a Monday or Friday when bosses are at their busiest. Studies have actually shown that people are more receptive on a Tuesday or Wednesday after lunch. That way, they're not thinking about the weekend or their stomachs while you're getting up the nerve to ask about a raise! If you're afraid of being interrupted during your request, ask to speak to your supervisor for a few minutes after hours.

DON'T

1. Raise your tone of voice if your boss objects to your raise at first. Remember, he or she is paying you to do a certain job, and you're asking for more money to do the same job. Be professional and polite at all times, and listen more than demand. Chances are, if your supervisor doesn't award you a raise, they might hint at what else could be done to earn it. If they don't, don't be afraid to ask what steps would be necessary to "prove yourself".

2. Threaten with quitting if you don't get the raise or telling your boss you have another job offer unless you actually do. He may just call your bluff and let you go!

3. Stumble or beat around the bush with your request. Be straightforward and confident. You are a valuable member of a team and the supervisor hired you because they obviously thought you were the best qualified. If you have "Thank You" notes from customers or letters from the company praising you for a job well done, bring those to your meeting as well, as they'll help to cement your request and remind your supervisor of your role within the company and its progress.

4. Compare yourself to, or talk negatively about your coworkers or others in a position higher than you. You may think that this will put you in a positive light when it comes to a promotion or a raise, but to your boss, it shows that if you have a poor attitude toward your colleagues, you'll keep the same poor attitude if you are promoted.

Remember, be confident, professional and tactful. If the boss says "no" or wants to "think about it", open his mind to further consideration by volunteering to do more at the office. Stay an extra hour or help another team on a critical project. This demonstrates that you're willing to "tow the mark" rather than giving your boss the impression of "gimme the money first and THEN I'll work". Good luck! ***

The derrickman perform some or all of the following duties:
1. Align and manipulate sections of pipe or drill stem from a platform on the rig derrick during the removal and replacement of strings of pipe, or drill stem and drill bit.
2. Assist in setting up, taking down and transporting drilling and service rigs
3. Operate and maintain drilling rig diesel motors, transmissions, pumps and drilling mud systems, and mix mud chemicals, cements and additives
4. Read gauges to monitor pressure, density, rate and concentration and adjust pumping procedure as required
5. Record mud flows and volumes and take samples
6. Supervise floorhands and laborers

DRILLERS
1. Asist with well development and pumping tests
2. Direct rig crew in setting up rigs and drilling, completing or servicing oil and gas exploration and producing wells
3. Maintain records of drilling and servicing operations
4. Move drilling rigs and equipment from site to site, set up in the new site and connect power cables or hoses for water and air supply
5. Obtain drilling core samples
6. Operate controls of drill or service rig drilling and hoisting machinery including equipment such as pumps for air, water and mud, and equipment and tools used to correct problems in drilled holes caused by mechanical breakdowns or by harmful natural conditions
7. Train or arrange for training of crew

Specific DUTIES responsibilities and accountabilities :
Under the direction of the Project Manager, reviews engineering process and detailed engineering designs, construction documents, and change order requests, and works to resolve potential issues or problems; Undertake initial field assessments of the existing WTP and the plant site; Perform systemic assessment of the water treatment plant; Prepare process calculations and DED, P&ID, hydraulic profile; site layout of the improved and expanded system; Review all unit operations, process tagging, P&ID, hydraulic profile, site layout of the improved system, also indepth review of the technical specifications and particular conditions; Conduct actual water quality tests, perform jar test, prepare detailed report; Prepare state of the art O&M of the improved water treatment plant; Perform all other functions as instructed by the Project Manager; Preparation of daily report and efficient QC/QA forms.


Qualification and Requirement :
Fluent in both Bahasa and English preferred (written and spoken);
Sanitary or Chemical Engineering degree from Indonesia or abroad;
Minimum 5 years working experience in design, project management and commissioning water treatment plant, rural water and sanitation projects in Indonesia;
Candidates must have strong background in water treatment plant, process design, construction supervision, preparation of operation and maintenance manuals, conduct of On the job training for the operators and technicians, preparation of jar test and maximum dosage of chemicals;

The candidate will be expected to; manage team of electrical technicians, carry out site surveys and prepare proposal, develop team and department capabilities and visit customers regularly.

5.VALVE TECHNICIAN (VT 03) :
with knowledge and experience in refurbishment, repair, overhaul and calibration of all types of valves and control systems. Expertise in the repair of pneumatic/hydraulic actuators and oilfield equipment will be essential. Site and/or offshore working experience essential.

6. METERING TECHNICIAN (MT 04) :
with knowledge in the calibration of system and equipment used in the metering and flow measurement including transmitters, flow meters, PD meters, provers, orifice plates and densitometers.

7. SEAL TECHNICIAN (ST 05) :
with knowledge and experience to repair, assemble and testing of mechanical seals used in oil and gas industries. Expertise in lapping of seal faces and analyzing the seal failure. Knowledge of dry gas seals will be preferred. Minimum qualification of degree or diploma holders preferably in Mechanical Engineering.

8. CALIBRATION ENGINEERS (CE 06) :
with experience in electrical, pressure and temperature calibration standards and working within an accredited environment. There will also be a requirement to work on site on metering skids calibrating field instrumentation and previous experience is essential. The typical qualification expected is an engineering degree in a related subject such as electronic or physic.

9. HYDRAULIC TECHNICIAN (HT 07) :
with knowledge and experience in troubleshooting and repairing heavy equipment. Also inspecting, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, skid steer loader etc. Maintains all repair records including parts, fluids, labor, repair work and mileage.

10. ELECTRICAL WIREMEN (EW 08) :
with knowledge and relevant experience in reading of electrical control wiring diagram, wiring of switchgear and electrical components. Must experience in assembly of low voltage panel boards/switchboards.

11. BUSBAR FITTER (BF 09) :
with knowledge in busbar fabrication and assembly of busbar. Must have experience in assembly of low
voltage pane board/switchboard.

12. DRAUGHTSMAN (D 10) :
with knowledge and experience in the LV switchboards assembly with excellent knowledge of AutoCAD. Expertise in electrical controls, preparation of general arrangement drawings, single line diagrams, bill of materials etc. Must have experience in assembly of low voltage panel boards/switchboards.

Handling Strange Interview Questions

In this week's job searching tip, we address an inquiry from a subscriber about an interviewer asking strange questions. As we discuss in this tip, persuading an interviewer to hire you often requires taking the initiative to find out what their root concerns really are, even if their questions seem strange or even illegal on the surface.

QUESTION FROM A SUBSCRIBER:

In an interview I was asked about what year I graduated. Is this considered illegal since it probes someone's age indirectly?

Also, this may not specifically be a legal/illegal question: I was asked what my GPA was in school, which was 17 years ago. I asked why it would be important to the position, but then answered it. The interviewer may or may have not been interested in determining my age, but the question seemed pretty uesless. Recommendations on how to handle obtuse questions like this one?

Dear J.O.,

Yes I agree the question is unusual and quite possibly illegal. Of course reporting illegal questions to government authorities or threatening to sue potential employers probably isn't the best job searching strategy. But I'm not a lawyer so you shouldn't use what I have to say as a substitute for legal advice. You can also review the EEOC's guidelines regarding discriminatory practices on their web site at this address: http://www.eeoc.gov/abouteeo/overview_practices.html

Some recruiters are unaware of employment laws and may not know that it is illegal to discriminate against older candidates.

Did you get the feeling your age would be a benefit or a liability in terms of persuading the person to hire you? I guess the ideal strategy for dealing with a situation like that would be to try to do what salespeople would call "value elicitation" to determine what the interviewer wants.

You could say something like "I did really well in school. In addition to having a solid GPA, I was involved in several extracurricular activities. My college experience has been very helpful in shaping my philosophies about work. It's interesting to contrast my experience in the real world with how I thought it would be before I graduated college. How do you feel about experience in relation to this position - are you looking for someone who has been out in the workforce and has gained perspective, or is the position more suited to a recent graduate?"

What I did with that response was I addressed the interviewer's purported concern about grades, and then went further to ask him if he's looking for someone right out of school or if he values experience. If the interviewer said they were looking for a recent graduate, the reason is probably that they want someone they can train and/or someone who doesn't want a lot of money. Of course you can ask more value elicitation questions to try to determine why the person is looking for the type of person they're looking for. The key here is to make sure your attitude is one of curiosity, not one of accusation or distrust. If you ask the question with a tone indicating you think the person's being unfair, you'll put them on the defensive and they'll be less likely to cooperate. Your tone should be similar to how a waiter would ask "Would you like fries or a baked potato?"

Once you determine the type of person the interviewer is looking for, you then need to decide for yourself whether you could fit in that position. If they're looking for someone they can pay a low salary to (like what they'd pay someone right out of school), you may decide to decline the offer. However, if you're not a recent grad but you're comfortable with taking a job that was designed for one, your next step becomes explaining to the interviewer how you would be a good fit for the job even though you're not a recent grad. You could talk about how you are open to new ideas/experiences, would love the challenge of learning something new, and that salary is not of utmost concern to you because you are very interested in working for their company (or something along those lines).

Another possibility if you determine that they're looking for someone who's different from you is to explain how your skillset and attributes would be a better fit than what they originally had in mind. For example, if they're looking for a recent grad to do an accounts receivable job, you could tell a story about how you worked at a company once where they hired a recent grad to do A/R and it didn't work. This puts you in the position of being a coach/advisor to the interviewer, and your perspective may be something they hadn't thought of.

Jika ada lowongan kerja, itu lebih menarik dan ada manfaatnya mengeluarkan uang untuk membelinya. Selain itu periode terbit juga akan menjadi pertimbangan pengiklan menggunakan jasa Anda. Apakah bulanan, dwimingguan atau bagaimana?

Mungkin nggak buletin itu disebar gratis? Menurut saya, itu mungkin. Hitung-hitungannya adalah asal income yang Anda peroleh dari pengiklan sudah dapat memenuhi segala biaya yang Anda butuhkan untuk buletin ini, seperti pertanyaan Anda keempat.

Mengambil keuntungan tentu tujuan setiap bisnis. Hanya saja jika produk yang ditawarkan betul-betul baru maka perlu usaha yang keras untuk memasarkan produk dan berpromosi memperkenalkan buletin Anda. Ini juga membutuhkan biaya yang tidak sedikit. Penerbitan perdana sudah mencapai BEP (break event point) menurut saya sudah bagus, asal jangan lupa promosi produk Anda tadi. Boleh jadi waktu yang diperlukan untuk berpromosi selama 2-3 bulan. Giving Up" vs. "Failure" In Your Internet Marketing Career

I never really liked the word "failure". The word "failure".. plain and simple denotes failure. There is nothing that sounds nice about the word "failure". It is not an attractive word and when we hear it, there is not much we can say to refute its' implications. It is said that 95 percent of online internet businesses will fail. Ironically, I had heard this statistic after I purchased both of my home based businesses. It did not give me a very hopeful feeling to say the least, and I actually questioned what I had actually gotten myself into.

I always wondered if these statistics were cited to sell programs and products. Negative advertising does work, because people are actually driven by fear. These statistics can also be a catalyst for the online internet newbie to give up prematurely before actually giving his or her program a chance to be successful. Does "giving up" imply failure or does "giving up" have its' own meaning unto itself. "Giving up" is definitely related to failure in every sense of the word. I myself, however, would like to change the statistic above to this. " A large percentage of the 95 percent online internet marketing failure rate is a result of "giving up" prematurely, before giving their program a chance to work".

I truly believe that many of us would not give up so fast if we had program sponsors that actually tried to help us get started after they took are money with their "sincere" sales pitch. I have not had the greatest experience myself in this area myself, and I did struggle quite a bit at first. I truly believe in the idea of online business coaching to help the newbie internet marketer get started as it will stop these "failures" before it is too late. ***

We hear so much nowadays about home based internet marketing businesses that are "self-automated"to run on their own. These businesses sound exciting because the first thing we think about is how our business will produce high profits for us as we are sitting on the beach in the Bahamas. How great this would be... if it were only true. Although there are some businesses that do have more automated features built in, these businesses cannot produce online income for you without some intervention on your part.

To be totally blunt, you will not make money online if you do not actively market yourself or your program on the internet. We hear so much about the failure rates in internet marketing. We also hear so much about internet scams or the latest scam designed to take your money and run with it. Although there are a lot of scams on the internet that we have to beware of, many of the programs advertised to make money are truly legitimate. The problem here, however, is that we are led to believe that we do not have to do very much to actually profit and make money from these programs.

Even if a program does have built in features which help the program sell itself,you as a home based business owner will have to market the program to get people to see it! If the program that you are currently involved in says that it will market your program for you, you may have to pay a pretty penny for this. This could mean that you would need to shell out hundreds, even thousands per month in an advertising cooperative. I would not do this at all... you are almost guaranteed to lose your money in these situations.

I do know some people who have lost their shirts in advertising cooperatives. In conclusion, we all must come to the realization that we will get out what we put in to our home based business, internet marketing business, or business franchise. I would say that this is especially true if you are an internet newbie and have just started or are looking to start a home based business. We must work hard on a daily basis to let people know about us and the products and services we have to offer. If we do not, success will not even be close to our fingertips. ***
