Tips Menghadapi Walk In Interview
Tak perlu menunggu datangnya surat panggilan. Dalam walk in interview Andalah yang harus proaktif 'menjemput bola'. Prinsipnya Vini, Vidi, Vici (Saya datang, bertanding dan menang). Walk in interview adalah jenis wawancara yang biasanya dilakukan bila posisi yang ingin diisi dan jumlah pelamarnya cukup besar. Proses wawancara atau perekrutan tidak hanya berlangsung di perusahaan tersebut, melainkan bisa saja terjadi di suatu tempat di luar gedung perusahaan, seperti di hall, hotel atau tempat lain.

Pada dasarnya menjalani walk ini interview sama saja dengan wawancara biasa. Hanya saja Anda dituntut kesiapan maksimal karena Anda langsung berhadapan pewawancara saat melamar. Beberapa hal yang perlu diperhatikan untuk memenangkan 'pertarungan'.

Teliti Iklan
Sebelum membuat lamaran, Anda perlu meneliti iklan lowongan kerjanya, apakah bidang kerja dan posisi yang ditawarkan sesuai dengan membuang-buang tenaga dan waktu. Pastikan juga tempatnya representatif dan perusahaannya jelas.

Resume dan CV
Setelah yakin bahwa lowongan tersebut memang sesuai dengan Anda, buatlah resume dan CV yang menarik dan lengkap, karena resume dan CV Anda langsung dibaca saat itu juga. Ketik dengan komputer dengan huruf yang mudah dibaca. Kemudian cetak resume dan CV di atas kertas yang bersih dan tidak keriting. Hindari membawa CV fotokopi karena Anda akan dinilai tidak serius.

Data Pendukung
Setelah itu, lengkapi dengan data-data pendukung lainnya, seperti ijazah, surat-surat referensi, foto 4X6 1 lembar, serta contoh hasil karya atau portfolio terbaik Anda. Masukkan semua kelengkapan ini ke dalam map atau amplop besar.

Persiapkan Diri
Sehari sebelum berangkat, pahami dulu lingkup kerja yang ditawarkan. Jangan sampai Anda datang ke sana masih bertanya soal posisi yang ditawarkan. Misal, jika posisi yang Anda lamar marketing, coba pelajari beberapa hal yang berkaitan dengan dunia marketing.

Penampilan Prima
Perhatikan penampilan Anda secara keseluruhan. Karena impresi pertama pewawancara sangat menentukan keberhasilan walk in interview Anda. Pilihlah busana yang paling sesuai dan sopan. Pastikan penampilan Anda rapi, bersih, cantik dan layak untuk menghadiri wawancara.

Alat Tulis
Bawalah alat tulis dan notes karena siapa tahu diperlukan saat wawancara. Kesiapan Anda menghadipi interview juga mendapat penilaian tersendiri. Jangan sampai Anda harus meminjam alat tulis pada pewawancara.

Isi Perut
Sebelum berangkat, isi perut Anda terlebih dahulu. Karena biasanya dalam walk in interview Anda akan menghadapi beberapa tes pada hari itu juga yang membutuhkan konsentrasi tinggi. Sehingga kenyamanan perut juga dijaga. Konsumsilah makanan bergizi secukupnya. Tapi, jangan konsumsi makanan yahg bergas dan tajam, karena akan menyulitkan hidup Anda.

Tepat Waktu
Kalau perlu Anda sudah tiba satu jam sebelum proses dimulai. Anda jadi punya kesempatan mempelajari suasana, menenangkan diri dan mempersiapkan segala sesuatunya. Datang lebih awal juga membuat Anda tidak perlu menunggu terlalu lama, mengingat pelamar yang datang ke walk in interview biasanya banyak.

Wajah Optimis
Tampilkan wajah penuh percaya diri, cerah ceria dan optimis. Jangan sekali pun menampakkan wajah kusam nan sendu di depan pewawancara. Karena tidak ada satu perusahaan pun yang mau mempekerjakan orang yang gampang putus asa. Tunjukkan keoptimisan Anda dengan menjabat tangan pewawancara secara mantap dan tatapan mata hangat.

Menjawab Taktis
Jawab semua pertanyaan dengan penuh percaya diri, jujur dan bersahabat, tapi tidak berlebihan. Jangan ragu menjawab jika Anda diminta untuk memberi penjelasan lebih terperinci. How To Survive A Job Loss

Has this ever happened to you: You have been working at a particular job for a few years. It s not the greatest job and it hasn t always allowed you to capitalize on your unique gifts or talents. But it s ok, and it pays the bills. The job has become a part of your life s routine.

Then one day, without any forewarning, you re let go. In what seems like a split second, you go from being gainfully employed to joining the ranks of the unemployed. It s a shock to the system. A tremendous level of stress can accompany being unemployed. You re certainly affected by the loss of income. You may also have a related drop in your level of confidence. Your unemployment may be impacting your home life and personal relationships. There may be a degree of depression that you are dealing with. You may be harboring lingering resentments toward those people responsible for your layoff.

Finding a job is challenging enough; if you bring these emotions into your job search efforts, you will be placing yourself in a very disadvantageous position. You need to be clear-headed and focused to move yourself forward. You must find a way to bring yourself into a more balanced state. Realizing that you are not alone may be a good first step. Renewing or maintaining friendships is another. Appreciating yourself in every way possible goes a long way. Relaxation exercises, deep breathing, yoga, meditation, working out, and eating healthier foods can make you feel a lot better about yourself.

These steps can help you move past any negative emotions and toward a much healthier mental state. Having a clear and positive vision for yourself and your future may be the icing on the cake needed to launch your job search process and move you quickly in the direction of obtaining your career goals. You need to know that you will get through this. You will get on the other side of it. It may take some time, and it may not be the most comfortable period in your life. But your willingness to move forward and your intention to stay on track will invariably lead you to the next phase of your career, and life.

Unfortunately, job search can be a "numbers game".

When the Internet first came on the job search scene it was a great differentiator. Candidates who found jobs advertised on the Internet and submitted their resumes via email often went to the front of the line. They were competing with other job searchers who were still combing the Sunday Classifieds and faxing or mailing their resumes to HR departments.

My, how times have changed! Now, the online job boards (Monster, DICE, HotJobs, CareerBuilder, etc.) have replaced the Classifieds as the "matchmaker" for candidates and jobs. Companies that use the job boards have built entire infrastructures around posting jobs and receiving, sorting, and sifting resumes. Staffing specialists in companies are often nameless, hiding behind an anonymous email id that obviously does not belong to a person. How do you get your resume read? How do you get it into the hands of the individual that will make the decision on whom to interview?

Well, unless you have an "inside connection", it can be a "numbers game". How long will it take you to submit your resume to enough Recruiters and Hiring Managers to find the one that will actually read your resume and contact you to discuss an opportunity? Anyone who has been in the job market in the last 4-5 years knows the answer... it can take a long time! No matter how qualified you may be, no matter how many late nights you spend combing the job boards and responding to postings, it's going to be a frustrating experience!

Pada 15 Februari 2008 suami saya melamar pekerjaan ke PT Nomura Internusa Prima (NIP) beralamat di Plaza BBD, Jalan Imam Bonjol, No 61 Lantai 14, Jakarta Pusat. Informasi tentang lowongan kerja tersebut diperoleh dari salah satu koran ternama di Jakarta.

Hari itu juga suami saya langsung diwawancara oleh seorang wanita yang mengaku bernama Ria dan dimintai uang sebesar Rp 300.000 untuk biaya psikotes dan juga diberikan kuitansi lengkap beserta nama dan alamat PT tersebut. Suami saya dijanjikan akan dikonfirmasi pada hari Sabtu, 16 Februari 2008, atau Senin, 18 Februari 2008. Namun, sampai hari Selasa, 19 Februari 2008, tidak ada konfirmasi apa pun.

Ketika suami saya menelepon ke PT yang bersangkutan tidak ada yang menjawab. Karena penasaran, suami saya mendatangi kembali ke alamat PT tersebut. Namun, kenyataan yang dihadapi suami saya bahwa PT NIP telah raib. Setelah mencari informasi ke keamanan Plaza BBD, PT NIP sudah tutup sejak 16 Februari 2008.

Saya dan suami sangat kecewa dengan kejadian tersebut. Mengherankan, kenapa masih ada orang yang mau memberi nafkah untuk keluarganya dengan cara menipu. Saya hanya bisa mengimbau kepada para pelamar kerja agar hati-hati terhadap penipuan berkedok lowongan kerja meskipun iklan yang dipasang lewat koran dan gedung ternama.

Bagi para oknum yang mengatasnamakan diri sebagai PT Nomura Internusa Prima, selamat menikmati uang haram yang diperoleh. ***

The Path of Least Resistance

I spend a bit of time on airplanes. So, I was surprised by what I observed on a regional jet. Yes, it was holiday travel. Yes, the flight was overbooked. Yes, infrequent and tired travelers were creating challenges for the only stewardess. Still, she saw the small boy, no more than eight, seated in the exit row next to his grandfather. She chose to ignore him, wishing and hoping her safety message stating a person must be over fifteen to sit in the exit row would fix it. Maybe she didn't want the hassle of trying to reseat passengers on an already late flight. Maybe she was tired, too. Who knows?

What I do know is that despite the safety implications of her decision, she chose the path of least resistance that day. And she's not alone. Many people take that path at work. They choose the easier way rather than doing what needs to be done. But, the path of least resistance leads away from winning at working.

You'll be on that path if you turn a blind eye to something you know needs solving but you don't want to address it or "rock the boat;" or you let a mistake pass your desk for someone else to catch and fix because it's too complicated or time-consuming; or you ignore a difficult person or a recurring problem because you don't want to create unpleasantness or deal with conflict; or you pass off a poor performer to another department rather than face the difficult conversation; or you resolve the customer complaint without calling out or solving the bigger issues behind it.

In my thinking, that's the adult equivalent of my son, as a child, pretending he never noticed the toilet paper roll needed replacing. He'd leave a sheet or two on the cardboard tube so he didn't have to be the one to do anything about it. Of course no one in the house was fooled. No one at work is either.

In twenty years of management, I've learned that the difference between doing the right thing and the easy thing significantly differentiates people's performance. We can debate what the right thing to do is at any given time. Sometimes, it might be choosing the more difficult, challenging, time-consuming path or the one that comes with more risk. But like my son and that stewardess, I think most of us know what the right thing is most of the time, and we know when we've chosen the easier way.

In Lee Ann Womack's country hit, "I Hope You Dance," there's a great line that applies as much to work as it does to life: "I hope you'll never fear those mountains in the distance; Never settle for the path of least resistance." You see, if you want to be winning at working, you can't fear the mountains of change, discomfort, conflict, unpleasantness, hard work, or difficult choices. ***

Kalau selama ini brand yang melekat terlanjur biasa-biasa saja, maka Anda perlu merombak dan memperbaikinya.

Menurut Handito Hadi Joewono, dari Branding Indonesia, peran brand sangat penting bagi setiap orang, khususnya para karyawan. Antara lain membuat kita mudah dikenal dan bisa membangun citra perusahaan. "Makin baik brand kita, makin luas networkingnya, kita bisa menjadi ambassador perusahaan, Pada akhirnya akan meningkatkan kepuasan pelanggan pada perusahaan," papar Hadi.

Dengan kata lain, jika memiliki brand yang baik kita tak hanya makin dikenal tapi juga ikut berkontribusi pada perusahaan dalam hal pencapaian visi dan misi perusahaan. Hal ini tentu saja akan meningkatkan daya jual kita sehingga perusahaan akan melihat kita sebagai aset yang berharga. Ujung-ujungnya tentu saja kompensasi yang sesuai, baik berupa kenaikan jabatan atau gaji.

Untuk melakukan re-branding, menurut Hadi ada beberapa langkah yang perlu kita lakukan, yakni:

1. Perumusan
Pada langkah pertama ini kita perlu menentukan positioning yang ingin kita pilih. Maksudnya kita tentukan persepsi yang ingin orang lihat pada diri kita. Misalnya saja si pekerja keras, si suka membantu, dan sebagainya.

2. Brand Identity
Menentukan identitas berarti kita perlu memilih simbol-simbol yang konsisten sehingga identitas ini akan melekat pada diri kita. Simbol yang dimaksud di sini ada yang berupa fisik atau penampilan yang menjadi ciri khas, misalnya selalu mengenakan kemeja lengan panjang yang digulung.

Ada pula simbol yang non fisik, misalnya karakter atau perilaku, seperti humoris atau smart. Simbol non fisik juga termasuk nama panggilan. "Tentukan nama panggilan kita yang mudah diingat dan dikenal," saran Hadi.

3. Komunikasikan
Setelah menentukan positioning dan brand identity, terakhir adalah mencari cara jitu untuk mempromosikan brand kita, baik di kantor atau di luar kantor. Hal ini bisa dimulai dari hal sederhana, semisal selalu menyebutkan nama kita saat bertemu klien. Layaknya sebuah produk, ia akan makin dikenal jika terus diiklankan. ***

After Your Interview - What Must You Do Next?

Other than actually landing the interview itself and living through it, waiting after the interview and wondering whether you will get a phone call or a rejection letter can be one of the most difficult aspects of searching for a job. What you do after the interview should actually start while you are still working the interview.

Prior to leaving make sure that you have noted the name of the person or persons who interviewed you. This will come in handy later for a number of purposes. Also, do make sure that you shake hands once again with your interviewer and thank them for taking the time to meet with you. Also, it s not out of line to ask when they expect to be making a decision. This gives you a timeline to go by.

Always be sure to send a thank-you letter. This practice not only demonstrates good social etiquette but it also helps to keep you and your skills fresh in the mind of the interviewer. On some occasions an interviewer already has an idea by the time the interviews are completed who they will be calling to offer the job; however on many more occasions they still remain unsure who will be awarded that coveted slot. Sometimes they want a little time to sleep on the decision or they may need to consult supervisors or others within their organization regarding the hiring decision. If a decision has not already been reached in the mind of the employer when all of the interviews have been completed, taking the time to send a thank-you letter can go a long way toward making sure you don t get lost in the shuffle.

While it s a good idea to send a polite thank you note to the person who interviewed you it is not a good idea to pester that person to no end. The only result you are likely to achieve through this strategy is alienating yourself from them and assuring that you won t get the job. Although don t take no for an answer is a strategy that many aggressive job coaches recommend; it is still always best to observe polite social standards.

That is not to say that you should sit by the phone and allow several weeks to elapse, waiting, while you hear nothing and do nothing. Ideally, your thank you letter should have gone out the same day as the interview, no later than the following day. This means that the interviewer should receive it within one to two days following the initial interview.

Keep track of when the employer indicated a decision would be made and if that time has come and gone, it is perfectly permissible to go ahead and phone them. However; when you do make the call, be polite. State your name, the date you interviewed and the position for which you interviewed. You may say that you are following up to inquire as to whether a decision has been made.

At this point, the conversation can go a number of ways. The employer may indicate that a decision has been made and all candidates who were not selected will be receiving a letter in the mail. If this is the response you receive, it is your cue that you were not hired. Had you been, you would have received a phone call from the employer by now. Thank them for their times, ask them to keep you in mind for any future vacancies and get off the line. Don t burn any bridges. It could be that there was simply a better qualified candidate for that particular position, but they might consider you for a different, future position.

On the other hand, the employer may state that they are still reviewing resume, conducting interviews, etc, etc. This type of response could mean a couple of different things. It could mean that they really have made a decision and the person just doesn t feel comfortable telling you on the phone that you weren t selected or it could simply be taken at face value. Perhaps something came up and their initial timeline has been forced to be extended somewhat. In either case, always remain polite and thank them for their time. After you end the call, make a note of the date on your planner and set a tickler to remind yourself to call back in a week if you still haven t heard anything. Call back once a week, every week until a decision is made. Once a week is persistent; a trait which is to be admired. Once a day is pesky; a trait that should be avoided at all costs.

While it can be difficult to wait around after the interview, the most important two things that you should do is not blow the opportunity by annoying the employer with numerous pesky phone calls and by all means do not show up announced at their office door asking if they have arrived at a decision. Finally, make sure that you don t pin all your hopes on one job. Yes, it may have been your first choice and your ideal dream job; however; this is probably also true for someone else as well. Use the time while you are waiting to hear back from the employer to line up your B plan. Continue job searching, scheduling interviews and most importantly, reminding yourself that you can do this. ***

3. Hindari Politik Perusahaan
Jika beredar gosip di kantor, jangan berikan komentar Anda walaupun tentang orang yang tidak Anda sukai. Jangan sampai komentar Anda terhadap gosip yang sedang berkembang menjadi bumerang bagi Anda.

4. Rapi
Selalu rapi terhadap segala sesuatu yang Anda pakai, misalnya mencuci gelas atau piring sehabis Anda gunakan. Jangan tinggalkan di wastafel atau di pantry secara sembarangan dan memberi kesan seolah-olah bukan tugas Anda untuk membersihkannya.

5. Sopan bertelepon
Set telepon genggam Anda pada posisi silent. Belum tentu nada suara telepon genggam Anda disukai oleh orang lain dan justru membuat orang lain tidak dapat berkonsentrasi bekerja pada saat berbunyi.

6. Kurangi pajangan
Pastikan Anda tidak memajang berbagai pajangan dan foto di tempat kerja. Mungkin bagi Anda pajangan serta foto-foto yang Anda pampang membuat Anda merasa betah tetapi Anda harus sadar belum tentu orang lain menyukainya.

7. Kendalikan diri
Usahakan untuk tidak membeberkan ketidakbahagiaan kehidupan pribadi maupun profesional Anda. Rekan sekerja Anda akan ngeri melihat sikap negatif Anda saat menghadapi kejadian tertentu.

8. Menghormati milik orang lain
Waktu yang Anda habiskan dengan rekan sekerja biasanya lebih banyak bila dibandingkan dengan waktu yang Anda habiskan dengan keluarga. Oleh karena itu rekan sekerja Anda akan menghargai bila Anda tidak menggunakan milik pribadi mereka semaunya, misalnya tidak menggunakan bolpen atau penghapus teman seenaknya.

9. Jangan bergosip

Looking for work online is an efficient way to search but it's not always the perfect solution to find a job. Chris Russell, President & Founder of the local job site FairfieldCountyJobs.com discusses the most commonly asked questions he hears from jobseekers.

1. I submitted my resume online but how do I know it was received?
Chances are you won't. This is perhaps the biggest gripe jobseekers have today about applying online. If a person emails his/her resume the company might have an email auto responder set up to reply back that it was received. But the majority of companies fail to do this. In cases like this it's important to try and follow up with the company if possible.

2. If the date posted on a job is more than a few weeks old should I still apply for it?
Absolutely yes! There is no way to tell if the job has been filled. Chances are it still is open because hiring cycles can drag out for weeks as busy recruiters sift through resume piles and manage a variety of other tasks. When in doubt, always apply.

3. Why do companies post a "confidential" ad?
They do this for a number of reasons the 2 main ones being that they don't want their current employees to know they are looking for someone who might replace them or they don't want to let other companies know they are hiring for a certain position for competitive reasons.

4. How do I convert my resume from a Word document (.doc) to a text file (.txt)?
If you have a resume designed in Microsoft Word, Choose "Save As" from the File Menu. Choose "Text Only with Line Breaks" in the dialog box menu. Format your text version to your liking. Much of your existing formatting will be lost but you can use symbols like ***** or -------- to provide lines and bullets.

5. I can't find any contact information other than an email address, what do I do?
Visit the company's website to find an address or fax number. You could also try calling them and asking the receptionist for a fax number to the human resources department. ***

A NEW OUTLOOK ON LIFE


Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be at the start of a new era? It s a thrilling feeling of achievement, and a great confidence booster as well. As a mom of two, I ve had to share my life between my family and my job in a school. I ve spent long days and nights caring for the others, until, one day after years, I came upon my son s newly purchased computer.

Since then I ve been a computer addict -(mind you, I didn t even know how to turn it on at first!)- and I finally got started in my new online career: Book Reviewing! It had never occurred to me that I could get all that information from the web; after all, my son and daughter used it only for playing games for hours on end. But it proved to be a very useful tool to me, and to my kids in the long run.

At first , everyone in the family teased me watching me try to learn all the nuts and bolts of this device.
It s for the kids, my husband would say. You will only get frustrated and tired. It s not for you, at your age!
However, I was not discouraged! What s wrong with my age? Being in my forties is not a problem . I can still learn a lot ! I would reply. And I was right. After a couple of months of perseverance , I started feeling confident enough to handle it , and now, my kids started asking me to explain to them a couple of tech things! Imagine that!

I still can t believe it I ve learned so many things all on my own. Of course , I was always trying to find some spare time and that was the hardest part of it but in the end I followed a specific timetable that proved to be a very good idea. I had also to buy a book about the Internet , a mini guide , but the rest of the information was available online. Apart from getting educated in this field, I ve also made some great new friends all over the world.

Book reviewing was an unexpected activity I came across while reading a newsletter online. Since I m an avid reader , I took to it at once. Now, I review print books, e-books, I maintain my own site online and I send articles to various sites all over the world. Freelancing online is a great way to reach people and places everywhere on the planet. Coming back to book reviewing, I find it great as I get a lot of free copies from authors and companies from all over the world, and I add them to my bookshelf. Reviewing other people s books has also helped me to learn how to write my own book . I have even learnt how to make a PDF book, an electronic book . I would like to share some information with you in case you are interested in becoming a book reviewer.

But you may wish to ask : Why become a reviewer?
There are several reasons for that choice. First, because you love books. If you are also an avid reader, you just can t miss this chance !
Second, you love writing. This is imperative. If you don t love writing, forget all about it.
Next, you want to get free copies and add them to your shelf. By all means , go ahead.
Moreover, you can have the latest releases. If this sounds exciting to you, then this activity it s the ideal one for you. If you take to all of the above, you just can t afford to miss the opportunity to become a reviewer. Yet, there may be another problem: you doubt your abilities to write a good review. You feel you need some guidance on how to write a critique. There is an easy solution:

Read other people s reviews.
I ve done that and it worked! So, you can do it too. I learnt all about reviewing online , all on my own. You only have to be patient and study as many different reviews as possible. Here comes another question:

Ketika bidang teknologi informasi (TI) berkembang demikian pesat, minat perempuan untuk menggeluti bidang ini masih tergolong minim. Padahal dari sisi kompetensi sebenarnya wanita tak kalah dengan laki-laki. Secara umum, posisi wanita di dunia TI sering dianggap berada selangkah di belakang pria, hal ini tampaknya terkait dengan stigma yang terlanjur melekat, perempuan lebih gaptek dibanding pria. Padahal dengan sifat khas perempuan, antara lain lebih teliti dan mampu bekerja lebih keras, peluang wanita untuk sukses di dunia IT sebenarnya cukup besar.

Hal tersebut dibenarkan oleh Indrajati Nugroho, Human Resource Director PT Microsoft Indonesia. "Dari sisi kemampuan saya melihat tidak ada masalah antara karyawan pria dan wanita, hanya saja keberanian wanita untuk terjun di bidang ini masih kurang," katanya. Dari sisi jenjang karir pun Indrajati berpendapat tidak ada perbedaan, dalam artian setiap perempuan bisa menempati semua posisi dalam dunia TI. Walaupun jumlahnya masih sedikit, namun Indrajati menilai saat ini jumlah pelamar perempuan di dunia TI semakin tinggi. "Saat ini perempuan yang berminat pada TI makin meningkat, bahkan beberapa posisi di dunia TI lebih didominasi perempuan," katanya.

Bahkan Indrajati membocorkan peluang karir di bidang TI sebenarnya lebih terbuka untuk perempuan. "Kalau ada dua kandidat pria dan wanita yang setara kualitasnya, terus terang kami lebih memilih yang wanita," kata Indrajati. Sifat-sifat alami yang dimiliki perempuan, seperti lebih ulet, sabar, dan pandai berkomunikasi, merupakan hal yang menjadi nilai lebih. Hal serupa juga diakui oleh Megawaty Khie, Country Manager Dell Indonesia. "Kami terus berusaha menyeimbangkan jumlah karyawan wanita dan pria. Saat ini di Dell Indonesia komposisi karyawan perempuan sudah mencapai 40 persen," katanya.

Peluang posisi yang sangat terbuka untuk perempuan antara lain program analis, bidang training dan pemasaran, atau project manager. Tak menutup kemungkinan pula wanita menjadi pemimpin, seperti jabatan Country Manager yang kini dipegang Megawaty Khie atau seperti Shinta W. Dhanuwardoyo yang menjabat sebagai Managing Director bubu internet.

Meskipun peluang terbuka luas, namun menurut Megawaty untuk mencapai posisi bergengsi di dunia TI dibutuhkan lebih dari sekedar kemampuan bekerja keras. "Keberanian wanita untuk mengeluarkan ide-ide masih kurang, tapi secara umum ini kelemahan yang dimiliki oleh orang Indonesia," katanya.

Untuk sukses di dunia TI, Megawaty menyarankan untuk meningkatkan keberanian dan terus mengasah kemampuan, salah satunya dengan mengikuti perkembangan teknologi. Sudah siap terjun di bidang ini? ***

Jobless in July

T
here is really nothing worse than being jobless in July, except perhaps being jobless in January during a snow storm in Cook County, Minnesota. News reports about the economy trying to make a come back are no encouragement to someone looking for work. It is a hopeless felling when you are jobless in the heart of the summer. July is for vacations, taking dips in the pool, playing golf and attending summer concerts. What is a jobless person to do? Dr. Phil would probably say, son, nothing happens unless you have a plan. Since you must work, seek summer job opportunities.

Save your major job search efforts for permanent full time employment until after Labor Day. The summer help will go back to school and those who are going on maternity or medical leave will notify the boss of their exit dates. Do you need work right away? Swallow your pride and pick-up a summer time job, i.e. restaurants that work until 1 a.m. or 2 a.m., home improvement stores, landscape companies and don t forget temp agencies. During the summer the unemployed are competing with the high school graduates and the college graduates, it is not fair, summer is a bummer.

This can be the time when you can also try your hand at starting your own little business. If you like to cook or barbecue, you may want to try it for profit. Start small, keep it simple and be creative. If you truly need a job and you or your spouse, significant other, mother or dad is good with a grill or makes a mean smoked chicken and garlic cheese wrap, give catering a try. The one thing people do all summer is eat. Some eat light, some don t, but everyone eats.

Do you have a friend who makes the best chocolate truffles in town? A bridal shop might allow you to put your flyer in their shop. Brides are always looking for tasty little gifts for their guest. A job in food is one of the most convenient positions a person can perform. Everyone loves good food and there is bound to be something that you can cook or learn to cook in relatively little time. Do you make a great barbecue sauce? Do you grind your own blend of coffee?

Don t stop looking for a permanent position, keep that resume circulating and visit community associations and organizations. Get out there and volunteer, meet people and introduce yourself to everyone. This is the time to become a social butterfly. Everyone needs to develop streams of income. Relying on one job for your livelihood today is unrealistic. Look at your joblessness as an opportunity to use your community as your source of income. Start a small business. Think about starting a small business. Find a job but don t let just the job be your salvation. Today that is a dangerous way to live. ***
