Seven Success Lessons From Super Bowl 43

"Defeat is a state of mind. No one is ever defeated until defeat has been accepted as reality. To me, defeat in anything is merely temporary, and its punishment is but an urge for me to greater effort to achieve my goal." Bruce Lee 1940-1973

In Super Bowl 43, both the Phoenix Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers refused to accept defeat until the full sixty minutes of the game were over and the result was written in history.

Both teams made many mistakes and were awarded many penalties but these simply pushed them on to greater efforts. Vince Lombardi knew the value of effort. It is no wonder that the Super Bowl trophy is named after him. A typical quote of his stresses the enormous power of effort or hard work:

"The dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price."

Some people today think hard work or effort is old fashioned. They believe that success is mainly the result of luck and that failure is an accident of birth. They believe, for example, that a great sprinter was lucky enough to be born with the ability to sprint. They don't see or value the huge amount of work that turns that ability into extraordinary speed.

One of my martial arts students used to train occasionally with runners like Linford Christie. He noticed that several talented runners never achieved the success they were capable of simply because they did not add hard, consistent work to their inherited talent or 'luck'.

One famous quote about luck and hard work has been attributed to several people including Gary Player, the golfer.

"The harder I work, the luckier I get"

Benjamin Franklin realized this centuries ago:

"Diligence is the mother of good luck."

Diligence is the 'constant and earnest effort to accomplish what is undertaken.' It is the 'persistent exertion of body or mind.'

One way, then, to get lucky is to work harder. Choosing good luck without the effort is not an option for most of us. We had no control over our genes but we do have control over our efforts.

As Seth Godin has stated, effort is always available to us. In a free country, no one can prevent us from working harder than we already do. And if we put in the extra effort we may start enjoying the company of 'luck'.

Seth points out that there are many kinds of effort:

"Effort takes many forms. Showing up, certainly. Knowing stuff (being smart might be luck of the draw, but knowing stuff is the result of effort)."

American footballers have to show to up to training camps and regular training and have to study and memorise many plays or plans of action. 'Knowing stuff' takes consistent effort. 'Knowing stuff' about how to set up and maintain a website or internet business takes regular effort. Even if you outsource this kind of work, it takes effort to pick the right people to work for you and further effort and knowledge to check what they do.

Both the Steelers and the Cardinals believed they could win and tried hard to do so. They did not rely on luck! Both demonstrated huge belief and effort. Believe and try hard and you may not win but fail to believe or try hard and you are sure to lose.

Luck alone will not score a touchdown for you in any professional game let alone in a Super Bowl. Years of disciplined effort and study are required.

Both sides displayed an enormous desire to win. Their competitive spirit was fierce and no quarter was given as one ferocious tackle followed another. Today, competition is seen as too cruel by many since one side has to lose whether in sport or business.

However, competition can push you to achieve your best whether you win or lose and there is no reason to be ashamed when you actually do your best. Not many people can claim to have done their best in anything!

Competition can teach you to be a real man or a real woman. In the film 'MacArthur', the general was asked where his home was. He replied 'West Point.' He believed that he had 'become a man on the playing fields of West Point.'

If you don't like the idea of competing with others, compete with yourself and outdo what you have already done. Donald Trump successfully built a Tower Hotel in Vegas and then outdid himself by building another.

He comments on his own performance:"I'm used to working hard, and therefore I'm used to expecting results. Some people call it luck, but like Ben Franklin said, diligence has something to do with it."

232 Countries and territories broadcast the Super Bowl. I watched it in the UK. It was such a roller coaster of a match that I stayed up till 3.30 a.m. for the finish. It was worth the effort.

Near the end of the match, the rival fans went from ecstasy to despair and back. With minutes to go, victory seemed certain for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then Kurt Warner, the experienced quarterback of the Phoenix Cardinals, proved yet again why he is still a valuable player at the age of 37.

Kurt is a Christian who believes that he has the support of God. He does not rely on God to win matches for him but just to give him the strength to face challenges on and off the field.

He did not even get into the NFL until he was 27 and finally achieved his dream of being a NFL quarter back. At one point in his life he was stacking supermarket shelves. His belief that, with God, anything is possible helped him to hold on to his dream until he achieved it.

Confidence, whether in God or oneself or one's team, can bring victory out of defeat and success out of failure whether on the field or off the field. Again and again, confidence or the lack of it is given by coaches and players as the reason for success or failure in both sport and ordinary life.

Anyone who can picture victory regularly and vividly will greatly increase their chances of success in any activity. Kurt has a past record of victory which would make creating such pictures comparatively easy. He is probably the most accurate quarter back in the NFL.

However, just before half-time, he threw a pass which was intercepted by James Harrison of the Steelers who ran for a hundred yard interception and scored a touchdown.

Kurt, like all great players and great non players, bounced back from this damaging mistake. In the second half, he threw the ball to his main receiver, Larry Fitzgerald, who scorched a trail up the middle of the field to score a touch down which placed the Cardinals in the lead.

The Pittsburgh fans looked stunned. Only a few minutes were left in the fourth quarter. A miracle, in the form of a touch down, would be needed if the Steelers were to win a record breaking sixth Super Bowl victory.

Steelers' quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, who has already won a Super Bowl, does everything he is not supposed to. A quarterback is meant to stay in the pocket - the area close to the players who can protect him. He doesn't!

He is meant to get rid of the ball quickly before the opposing players flatten him. He doesn't! He prefers to run around in all directions until he spots a suitable player to throw to.

However, like Kurt Warner, he throws the ball with both confidence and accuracy and, like the other Steelers, he never gives up. He proves that you can break some of the rules and still succeed. He also had the confidence which comes from already having won a Super Bowl.

Near the end of the game, when the Steelers were losing and their situation seemed hopeless, he threw two brilliant passes. The first one into the left corner of the end zone would have won the game for them but went straight through the hands of Santonio Holmes.

However, Santonio came back immediately from this failure and caught the next throw which went into the right corner of the end zone.

Santonio grasped the ball, on tiptoes, right at the far corner of the end zone surrounded by the Cardinals' defence.

With only 35 seconds left, the game was won for the Steelers. The final score was 27-23 and Santonio was declared the MVP of Super Bowl 43. Santonio is only five foot and eleven inches tall physically but is a giant in attitude.

He puts his brilliant footwork down to chasing rabbits in the mud when he was a boy whose family relied on selling rabbits for part of their income. Practice, whether intentional or just part of balancing the family budget, is a key factor in succeeding at any activity. Some experts believe that just practising memorising a pack of cards or list of things can improve your IQ.

Ben Roethlisberger, who might well have been named MVP instead of Holmes, was asked what he had learned about himself that night. His reply was brief but telling:

"That anything is possible!"

The Steelers' head coach, Mike Tomlin, has not allowed his age to limit his ambitions. At 32, he is the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl. Much of his confidence comes from the fact that he was selected as head coach by the Rooney family who have run the Steelers' franchise for many successful years.

He also showed wisdom beyond his years by making sure that the offence of the Steelers received as much praise as their ferocious defence:

"We've got a team that doesn't blink in the face of adversity. It's never going to be pretty or perfect but they've got a great deal of resolve and it was put on display. Our defense gets a lot of recognition and rightfully so but what you saw from our quarterback and our offence at the end of that football game is what they've provided all year for us. When we've needed it the most, they've done it and done it big."

Many people don't realize the huge amount of work and planning that goes into just one game of American football. Plays are planned in detail and practised over and over again. The winning play in this Super Bowl was a repeat of the previous play. It had simply been switched from left to right. It has been said: "Fail to plan, and you will plan to fail."

Many success lessons can be learned from Super Bowl 43 but seven of the most important are:

1. Don't accept defeat until your time is up and the final deadline has been reached.

2. Turn your failures or 'bad luck' around by making greater efforts. If you do make mistakes, don't be paralyzed by them. The option to work harder is always available! Create your own 'luck'!

3. In 'hopeless' situations, stay calm and 'don't blink in the face of adversity'. Believe in yourself and/or God and bounce back to success

4. You don't always need to follow all the rules. Refuse to be typecast and you might still achieve success in your own way.

5. Realize that nothing is impossible and visualize yourself daily as having already achieved what seemed impossible.

6. Don't despise small chunks of time. You can become a world champion within the space of one minute!

7. Don't fail to plan! Don't make things up as you go along unless you have to. Discipline yourself to work or practise your plan every single day and not just every now and then when you feel like it.***
