Two recent scientific studies have shown the importance of the presence of HAPPINESS in your social network and HOPE in your actions, if you are going to thrive.
The first study was a longitudinal study of 4,739 people and concluded the people's HAPPINESS depends on the HAPPINESS of others with whom they connected. In fact, people's HAPPINESS appears to impact others up to three degrees of separation. In other words, my happiness can have an impact on the friend of my friend's friend. The study clearly shows the happiness spreads and does not just cluster together. The strongest impact is seen on the network within one mile of the happiness. However, the impact is not seen between co-workers. This shows the importance of networking outside the walls of your work environment!
A second study found that people who used goal setting, pathway thinking, and sustainable motivation to turn PASSIVE HOPE into ACTIVE HOPE had greater life meaning and self-esteem and reduced depression and anxiety. In this research, passive hope was considered a passive emotion occurring only in life's darkest moments. Active hope, on the other hand, was operationalized as a process through which people (1) set goals; (2) develop specific strategies by which to achieve those goals, and; (3) build and sustain the motivation to execute those strategies. Therefore, we move from passive hope to active hope by setting goals, developing various strategies and contingency paths for achieving those goals, and use affirmations to build momentum and overcome obstacles.
The audacity of active hope
Passive Hope is an important first step on the journey to better places. President Barrack Obama helped many people take that first mental step with his presidential campaign and its messages. However, in observing President Barack Obama during his early days in office, we can see that the journey is going to require much more than passive hope.
Each of us needs to take several additional steps to turn passive hope into active hope:
• We need to grasp hope it into specific dreams for the future
• We must turn our dreams into compelling future visions
• We must turn our visions into specific goals
• We must turn our goals into specific strategies and contingency paths
• Finally, we must put the right energy behind it all our active hope
When we take these steps, we not only will do great things but we will improve our life meaning and self-esteem while reducing anxiety and depression. These are all worthy pursuits and objectives for these unprecedented tough times!***
