Most job applicants especially the first timers are not aware of the vital role the cover letter plays in any job application. They think that the cover letter merely serves as an introduction and that the resume is the real thing. Yes, the resume contains all the good things any future employer should consider but in the cover letter, you could actually expound on all of those goodies and add extras. You could put emphasis on your qualities that you feel would benefit the company a great deal. You could inform the employer the details on how you decided to apply for a position in their company and how much you want that position. Just as long as you do not make your letter sound desperate and you write it professionally, your chances of getting that job is pretty high.

You could take easy on your cover letter but if you really want to see the good ones, you could check sample of cover letters available online. These samples usually deal with sales and nursing jobs but you could always find something that would suit your desired position. You may choose to use one of the sample of cover letters and just modify it a little to make it sound like you or you may research for writing tips and do your own.
