Youth Leadership Training - Seminars That Prepare Youth For Successful Leadership Internships
By Stephanie Harbin
While leadership internships are unique opportunities for providing youth with experience and exposure, preparation is essential. Therefore, developing and delivering a series of seminars on internships is suggested. To assist you, this article recommends relevant subjects to cover in the sessions. Youth will gain vital information and increase their confidence.
Seminar Topics
* Etiquette
Dedicate a session or two to covering etiquette. Do not assume that youth know what to do; many adults lack good manners. Plan a special event to teach dining etiquette. Review how to read a table setting. Give youth a strong dose of the basics. Use another session to deal with email etiquette, cell phones, voice mail, handshakes, and thank you letters.
* Expectations
Outline the expectations of employers along with the expectations of the program. Even if the internships are volunteer, they require the commitment of teens. Hence, draw similarities between going to school and going to work.
* Dress for Success
Stress the importance of dressing for success. The goal is to project a professional and positive image. Explain what is acceptable and what is unacceptable; clarify the meaning of business casual. Think about inviting a local retailer to do a presentation on how to mix and match outfits. Explore the possibility of bringing the teens into the store for an on-site workshop.
* What it Takes to Succeed
Prepare a module on what it takes to succeed. Discuss what initiative is and give examples of how they can take initiative in the field. Likewise, discuss the importance of a good attitude, team work, and punctuality. Let youth know that they will be evaluated in these areas.
* Communications
Responding to conflicts, dealing with difficult people, communication styles, and creative problem solving are some of the top picks to be placed on the agenda. At the same time, think about leading a session on grammar. Effective communications skills are always at the heart of the matter.
Preparation makes the difference. So, equip youth with the necessary information to have successful leadership internships. By discussing the items presented here, you will be taking critical steps to ensure that youth are ready and confident.

How Great Leaders Motivate Ordinary People to Do Extraordinary Things
By Dr. Richard C. Baiz, D. B. A.
Over the years, many of us have been astounded with how movements have taken place or how an interest goes from a minor activity to a full blown fad and everyone wants to jump on. The question is how did that take place? What special ingredient did a leader introduce that charged up a population of people to jump on and take a ride to success or victory? Most leaders are calculating and they are experts at knowing how to empower people to the point of feeling fulfilled. They know how to convey their convictions for the common good and to demonstrate to others that hard work will bring about change that will add positive aspects to their lives. Such leaders are common in various settings and in a myriad of professions; in the public and private sector, in the world of corporate America, to the sports world, from the world of business to the world of the military. Leaders will be there to enhance the talent of individuals to the point of motivating them and encourage them that they indeed are champions, winners and leaders themselves in the competitive world of success achievements and performance.
Leaders understand that the primary premise for success lies with establishing a set of values, as typically they immediately set in stage behavioral rules for following as a means for establishing issues of interactive relationship building within the organization, team or business. I often think of successful leaders whom have had a phenomenal impact in the world of leading at extraordinary levels with individuals that quite frankly ordinary people such as: President Ronald Reagan, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Coach Vince Lombardi, Coach John Wooden, Union Leader Cesar Chavez, Corporate icon Lee Iacocca not to mention many of America's first Ladies all have been gifted with the ability to convey to those they led with understanding, appreciation and valuing their skills, talents and devotion to their respected causes.
All knew that in order to get the best from the people they led on the road to success and accomplishments; that they will need to have a full understanding of what specifically is expected of them and what in return will be the reward for fulfilling the task of those expectations. Keep in mind none of these leaders were provided with a talented group of people that were equipped with the administrative tools to implement and executive tasks of multi-level applications, i.e. the skill of multi tasking. These leaders were not provided with people that understood the execution of performing complex systems designs nor with individuals that understood the politics of hate, yet through an approach of non violence and love for humanity, the biggest combatant for violence, will be non violence and love.
All of these leaders addressed issues of character building through the process of educational reinforcement of empowerment. They all on a daily basis taught and they taught from a perspective of values based on respect for one another, with the intent that they will work with one another to accomplish a specific goal with a vision that positive progressive change will be the ultimate prize. When one hears and observes the above mentioned leaders one will be able to view leaders who are constantly in a teaching mode and it is rare when they do not take advantage of a teaching opportunity to win or to be victorious at a particular cause or that the company will have annual outcomes that have profits or that our country was better off because under the duress of the pessimist lied a courageous bold man that convinced America that we have yet to see our better days. All of these leaders left the philosophy in their people to belief in themselves and to have faith in themselves.
