5 Strategies to De-Stress

5 Strategies to De-Stress
By Tonja Steel
April is national stress awareness month and the Health Resource Network has named April 16th, national stress awareness day. With the recent stock market losses, job layoffs and pending foreclosures there is no time like the present to learn more about strategies to reduce your stress. What follows are five techniques to keep your stress in check.

1. Prioritize with Passion

At the turn of the 19th century, the workplace motto was simple-- work hard." Life was pretty simple and each employee was expected to get the job done with little complaining. As we saw technology emerge in the 70s and 80s the new motto that arose in the work place was --work smart. Employees were expected to find ways to use technology and innovation to become efficient. Today´s motto is neither like the work hard or work smart motto. In this new economy the motto is -- work passionately. Many workers are finding themselves out of a job and are now faced with the opportunity to pursue their own passions whether that means starting their own companies or re-thinking their line of work. An effective way to manage your stress is to find something you are passionate about and spend some time doing it every day. When you free your mind up, even if its only 15 minutes playing the guitar or 30 minutes writing, you shift the energy in your field and attract new experiences and opportunities. The old strategies of "thinking" your way through a situation are of little value, this is your opportunity to pursue your passion.

2. Go to the Experts

The Heart Math organization is a global leader in best practices in handling stress. Heart Math recently developed the mobile emWave™ Personal Stress Reliever. The device uses state-of-the-art technology to show you when you are under stress (and thus not operating at your best). The result takes all sorts of beneficial shapes, including stress reduction; increased energy and resilience; greater mental clarity for decision-making and creativity; enhanced emotional balance and improved listening ability; better, more restful sleep, including better focus; better health; and simply, a more easeful existence. I use the emWave several times a week and have found the product to be highly useful in identifying and reducing stress. In addition to creating the emWave, the Hearth Math organization has developed a wonderful free de-stress kit with many helpful suggestions for stress reduction. 3. Reprogram Your Unconscious Mind

Candace Pert, is a professor in the School of Medicine at Georgetown University. According to Pert, numerous unsaid words and unfelt feelings can create energy shifts in the body which allow stress to mount and dis-ease to occur. Whether you are facing foreclosure, a messy divorce, final exams or some other unpleasant or stressful situation, you can de-stress your body through sound. Pert has developed a CD entitled Psychosomatic Wellness: An Antidote to Stress. The CD is accompanied by a 10-page illustrated booklet discussing the scientific basis for psychosomatic wellness and how stressful thoughts can be reprogrammed. The CD package is a practical application of new paradigm physiology, scientifically designed to rest and heal your body/mind. Psychosomatic Wellness was created to help people alleviate stress and complete interrupted cellular healing and I have found great benefit from this product. 4. Read a Novel

One of the best ways to de-stress is to pick up a novel . Novels are full of plot twists and turns and help to remind us that nothing ever stays the same. Your life as it is now may be in a state of flux but you are moving through this stressful time. I recently read All The Way Down by Nick Hornby. The author found the right mix between depression, hope, humor and despair. I found myself laughing out loud and while engrossed in the novel, I had no time to create or focus on anything remotely stressful. Novels are a wonderful way to remind yourself that life is indeed good and that the challenges your are facing will pass.

5. Stop the Racing Thoughts

Limiting your stressful thought's is one of the hardest things to do but can be so effective in turning around almost any situation. You have the opportunity to defuse or accelerate stressful thoughts. For example, if you recently lost your job you may then worry how will I get health insurance? How do I pay my car note? Then how will I pay the mortgage turns into what if I can't pay the mortgage? Pretty soon, you have escalated a single thought into visualizing yourself on the street corner holding a sign that says will work for food. The truth is that you will find work, you will survive the transition, life will go on and chances are good that it won't be nearly as problematic as you can create in your mind. Try to limit the amount of time you give to stressful thoughts and create meaningful experiences with your downtime. A friend of mine recently was out of work for nearly 6 months; however, instead of constantly stressing out he exercised 2 times a day while out of work. He got a better job than he had before and went back into the workforce 20 pounds lighter. You have choices with what you choose to think and do while you are going through transitions, so be good to yourself and choose wisely.

Gardening As Stress Management
By Julie F
Stress is a part of everyday life, and more and more people are looking for ways to reduce daily tension. The demands of work, family life, and community obligations can all add up to create a sense of pressure in our lives. There are many ways to deal with stress - relaxation, exercise, meditation, and enjoying creative hobbies. If you think about it, gardening is a fantastic combination of all of these ways to attack stress. And, it has the added benefit of providing healthy foods for you and your family.

Mental health professionals have recognized the benefits of gardening, and have helped many patients by using "horticultural therapy" for physical, mental and emotional healing.

Having a garden is like having your own private retreat. In your garden, you can escape from the noise and information overload of everyday life, and focus on simple things. You'll feel the sun on your face, breathe the fresh air and reconnect with nature. Gardening allows your mind to quiet down as you work. The rhythm of the work is soothing and peaceful.

Concentrating on nurturing your plants and the results it produces is a great way to slow down your mind and live in the moment. Think about your breathing as you work, and stop to enjoy the world around you.

Physical activity is a great way to reduce stress. Exercising releases endorphins, which are your body's own pain-killers. Endorphins create a sense of happiness and well-being. You can release powerful endorphins while working in your garden, if you plan your garden "workouts" to provide a steady level of activity.

You can create a garden workout by alternating movements while you are in the garden. Rake for about 15 minutes, and then switch to digging, then pruning, and so on. Work through your variety of movements at a steady pace. You can also alternate more strenuous activities with less difficult ones.

It's important to stretch before and after your gardening sessions, which is an excellent stress-buster. Sooth your muscles and your mind as you reach, stretch and breathe deeply.

Gardening provides valuable rewards that are sure to lift your mood and reduce stress. You'll feel a sense of accomplishment when your garden yields crops of lush red tomatoes or crisp cucumbers. You'll benefit from the power of positive thinking as you watch the progress of your plants and nurture them through the growing season.

Be imaginative in the kitchen with your garden produce. Cooking is a wonderful creative activity that the whole family can enjoy. You can look forward to making delicious meals and trying new things, avoiding the stress of grocery lines and rising food prices.

If you're feeling stressed, you might head to the gym or put your feet up in front of the TV. But only gardening can provide you with a full range of stress reducing benefits. Get out in the garden and enjoy the unique combination of exercise, relaxation and rewards that gardening provides.

Gardening is the new health craze, so why wait to enjoy the benefits? Head outside and start a garden to reduce stress and live a healthy and active lifestyle. Losing weight is another great benefit to gardening, so if you want to trim a few extra pounds, gardening is perfect!

Learn Relaxation Meditation Techniques to Relieve Stress
By James D'Alterio
We are constantly being bombarded today with a lot of negative news in the media and are concerned about losing jobs or being to make mortgage payments. In order to cope with these pessimistic conditions, it would help to learn some relaxation meditation techniques.

The traditional ways of dealing with stress involve proper and balanced diets, getting regular exercise, and taking control of daily activities and have more effective time management.

The final method of dealing with stress is to engage in regular and daily meditation. Meditation techniques can be learned through Tai Chi and yoga. However, these two methods require professional training and long periods of practice in order to become effective.

You can get assistance for more effective and immediate meditation by incorporating binaural beats into your meditative process. Binaural beats are subliminal recordings that can cause the brain to move into the meditative states of Alpha and Theta more easily.

Binaural beats recordings work by introducing two different frequencies into each ear when you are wearing headphones. As an example, let's assume that one frequency of 200Hz is heard in one ear and another frequency of 180Hz is heard in the other. The brain recognizes the difference between the two frequencies and creates its own synchronized frequency of 10 Hz. This frequency is much lower than the frequency of the most active brainwave state of Beta which is in the range of 13-40 Hz.

Meditation typically occurs in the Alpha range (8-13Hz) and Theta range (4-8Hz). The objective is to be able to clear the mind of negative thoughts and relax enough to allow your mind and body to reach a meditative state. The binaural beats recordings can assist in reaching these objective more easily and quickly. As a result, you will be more encouraged to meditate more often because you are feeling the benefits of effective meditation.

Binaural beats recordings are another tool to add to your arsenal of relaxation meditation techniques. They can be embedded into your normal background music so that you are barely aware that they are present.

You can learn more about how to mediate more effectively and use this relaxation meditation technique at this site

How to Deal With Stress - Tips
By Alexander Oprea
After you know how to deal with stress effectively, you'll never be stressed, worried or tensed again. How you feel when you face life's problems, challenges and difficulties is determined by how you deal with stress. I will share with you some stress tips, which will help you to deal successfully with any type of stress.

There are several ways you can deal with stress quickly and efficiently.

The first way is to learn some proven stress relief activities and techniques like breathing exercises, meditation, refocusing thoughts, certain physical exercises and other activities that relieve stress. If you choose the right methods for stress relief, they can be very helpful and will definitely improve your life's quality.

Another way of how to deal with stress, and the most important one, is working on your perspective about life and making it better. Your perspective represents the way you see everything that happens to you, and how you react to different happenings or events. This determines if you are stressed out or relaxed and happy. The way you see things influences directly your level of inner peace and happiness. Having a positive mental attitude will help you a lot while thinking negatively will cause you great stress, grief and unhappiness.

Actually, a similar question for 'How to deal with stress?' is 'How to deal with problems, challenges, negative people and so on?'

Adopt a positive view upon life and everything will change...Guaranteed!

How you deal with what happens to you (how you react and how you see what happens to you), affects how you feel. And how you feel affects your life's quality. Things like our perspective, our attitude and our philosophy about life, make all the difference and shape our destiny. This is why some people live a mediocre life while others live an EXTRAORDINARY one.

A final stress tip that I want to reveal to you, is that YOU are in total control of your life. Therefore, you decide what you let to stress, worry, tense or upset you. So, decide that you won't allow anything to take away your happiness and joy, because life is way too short to waste it being stressed or depressed.
