Be in the Flow to Achieve Your Goals

Be in the Flow to Achieve Your Goals
By Prasanna Gunturi
We have needs. We have wants. We have dreams.

Buying a new home or a car. Getting a new job. Changing careers. Starting a new business. Continuing education. Finding the "elusive" dream partner. Pursuing a passion. Following a long-held dream.

To get what we want/desire, we set goals. We then plan and strategize and set a time frame.
Goals: some we put on paper, some we hold close to our heart, some we remember, some get lost in everyday life.

We work hard to achieve our goals. When we accomplish our goals, we feel a sense of achievement, a sense of pride, a sense of gratitude. It is even more so when we accomplish it against all odds, beyond our wildest expectations. Here are three common scenarios:

Scenario #1: Going against the flow

Sometimes when we reach our goals, we feel exhausted. We feel we worked very hard to get there. We had to push ourselves really hard. The journey seems like a struggle. It's like swimming against the tide, pedaling uphill.

Scenario #2: Going with the flow

At other times, we are swept by someone else's goals. There's plenty of energy and action around. We don't know how we really feel about it. We just go along with the flow. We arrive at the destination but are not sure if that's where we wanted to be.

Scenario #3: Being in the flow

Then there are those wonderful times, when everything happens effortlessly and seems to fall in place. We know exactly what we want and where we are going. We swim with the flow of the river, the tide favoring us. Our energy is used effectively and is multiplied with synergy created with the river. We are in the flow, yet there is a sense of control.

Given a choice, we would all choose Scenario #3 over the other ones, won't we? Now, what makes it all come together?

Here are some simple tips to be in the flow. Ask yourself these questions before you set your goals (and also during the journey to reach those goals):

1. Be clear on the goals you want to reach: What goals have you set for yourself? What do you really want?

2. Be sure why you want them: Why do you want them? What is the motivation? How do you feel about these goals? Are you setting them because you really WANT to? Or because you HAVE to or SHOULD?

3. Align your goals to your values and purpose: Are your goals truly aligned to your values and your purpose?

4. Invest anabolic energy: How much anabolic energy are you willing to put to achieve these goals? How may you align your thoughts, beliefs, emotions and actions so you reap the desired results (and not mixed results)?

5. Partner to generate Synergy: What are some ways you can create synergy? How can you make the journey effortless? Who can you partner with?

6. Adopt the right attitude: What attitude do you plan to adopt to achieve your goal? How can you stay positive and focused throughout? What will keep you going?

7. Plan for the goal: What resources do you need? What kind of support do you need? What is the realistic timeframe you are looking at? What are the strategies to adopt? Remember, Rome wasn't build in a day.

8. Be open to possibilities: How can you stay tuned and open to opportunities and possibilities that come along the way?

9. Commit to Action: What is the first step you can take to reach the goal? What is the next best step you can take?

Assignment:

* List ONE or more goals you are pursuing currently.
* Of the three scenarios presented, which one resonates with each of your goals?
* Explore some ways you can create synergy.

Do You Pass the Personal Development Tests?
By Kourosh Kavian
Words are funny sometimes. Take the phrase "personal development tests" and see what you associate to it. Is it a list of questions about your so called personal development;

* Do you meditate daily?
* Have you got your goals set for this year?
* Do you keep a personal development journal? etc...

Or do you think of personal development tests in terms of actually testing somebody else´s development and abilities? If so, you are probably relating it to colleges and schools and their obsession with measuring and evaluating every ability.

As owners of a personal development website, I have received inquires about personal development tests from various groups and institutions. Some have asked if I could provide one for kids, others have asked for tests like this for college students and some for business purposes. There seems to be a great demand for a product like this!

Although I am flattered by these requests and appreciate all suggestions and ideas, for the time being I will not provide any multiple choice test on this topic.

And that is for a number of reasons. If I ask "Do I pass a test like that if there was one and I had to take it myself?" All evidence points in the direction of "Yes". But beware! That is just Ego speaking.

It is Ego wanting to show off that I work with a world leading institute for personal development and really do apply all of the things that t site describes. We share everything from personal experience, and our experience spans over 25+ years. We are proud and Ego loves it! But the nourishment that we give to our higher selves can not be measured. And that is what really counts.

Consequently, the answer to the question in the headline would have to be "No!"

Personal development is a life long process. The day we stop developing, we are dead. There is never a definite point of arrival. You set goals and reach them, but then you set new goals. It is a constant process and the aim is to become a little bit more compassionate, caring, grateful, loving, richer, more experienced and a better person every day.

At the same time, we appreciate our life right now just the way it is. We are grateful for what we are and have and also for what is coming.

Yes, we evaluate our life situation on a regular basis and that is a kind of test, but if we passed the personal development tests? Nope. Nobody does. Some things cannot be accurately measured.

Regain Focus to Achieve Your Goals
By Reggie Waller
Are you on track to accomplish the goals that you set at the beginning of the year? If so, you are doing great. If not, you still have time to regain focus and get back on track. As times change, there are factors (economic, social, political, etc.) that can cause someone to fall behind and sometimes not be able to reach their goals. Let's look at a few things that you have control over that will assist putting you back on track.

First, where are you now within your plan of action? At the beginning of the year, you identified a set of key goals that you wanted to accomplish. Did you keep a written list of your goals and did you revisit this list on a periodic basis? Locate your list and if you lost it, recreate a new one. Make sure you put it in a spot where you can easily access it to keep you on track for accomplishing these set of goals. Whether they are business or personal goals, keep the list visible.

Now that you located or recreated your list of goals you wanted to accomplish, let's focus on when you wanted to accomplish them by. Has the target date already past? Did you set out to accomplish this by a certain quarter within the year? Maybe you need to readjust the timing based on certain circumstances. Where possible, try to break a bigger goal into a more manageable goal based on time and size. Breaking a goal down can sometimes assist on when you achieve it.

Finally, do you still need the assistance of someone else to help you accomplish these goals? Whom do you need to partner with to put you back on track? Maybe it is a business colleague or mentor. You're not in this alone. Having the support of others, helps you keep focused and motivated to accomplish your goals.

Getting back on track to accomplish some or all of your goals by the end of the year can still be accomplished. Remember to identify what it is you want to accomplish and keep your list visible. Check the timing to make sure you are hitting the key dates you need to accomplish the bigger goal. Enlist the help of others if needed as they want you to succeed and accomplish your goals.

What You Need to Know About SMART Goal Setting
By Victor Ghebre
Goals are important tools that can help you stay focused and bring you closer to the kind of career and life you envision for yourself. Goals help in measuring your progress and provide inspiration to make your way through problems and obstacles. It gives you control of your life and environment and keeps you from getting stressed and anxious about the future.

SMART Goal Setting

SMART goal setting is proven to be a very effective method of setting goals that are practical, effective and purposeful. So, what exactly is SMART goal setting? And what does SMART stand for?

S stands for Specific

It is important that your goal is as specific and as clearly defined as possible. There should be no conditionality or ambiguity to your goal. This will help create a clear point of focus and helps you channelize your energy properly. 'I will generate new business tomorrow' is an unspecific goal. On the other hand, 'I will call up 10 new business contacts tomorrow' is far more specific. The hallmark of a specific goal is that it includes the action that you need to take to achieve the goal.

M stands for Measurable

It is important that you are able to measure your goals. Else you will not be clear on the progress you have made. In the previous example, 'I will call up 10 new business contacts tomorrow' is a measurable goal. Either you do call 10 business associates or you do not. If you do not, you can easily measure how short you fell and create a plan to avoid these shortfalls.

A stands for Achievable

It is important that your goal is achievable. If it is not, you are likely to feel discount ant your progress and frustrated at your lack of results. It is therefore important to keep both your strengths and limitations in mind before you start your goal setting activity. In the same example, if you are someone who is mortified of reaching out to people, calling 10 people may be unachievable for you. On the other hand, if you no compunctions about calling people and reaching out to them, then 10 people would indeed be an achievable goal for you.

R stands for Realistic

When setting your goals, it is crucial that you are being realistic. If your goals are unrealistic, your likelihood of achieving them is very little. You will end up very frustrated dealing with failure and lack of results. In the previous example, is 10 people were to be substituted with 100 people, the goal would automatically be unrealistic. It would be humanly impossible to reach out to 100 people in a day and have result-oriented conversations with each one of them. Calling 10 people, on the other hand is a realistic goal.

Timely

Time is a very important component of SMART goal setting. Without a time line, it would be impossible to measure your goals. In the same example, if the word 'tomorrow' was missing, the goal would become ambiguous and indefinable. Calling 10 business contacts is not the only important part of the goal, the time line is equally important in helping you achieve the results you want.
