Get Your GRIT Together

Get Your GRIT Together
By Laurie Joslin
Tough times call for tough characters - do you have your GRIT together?

I know what you're thinking, "do I have my WHAT together?" But you heard it correctly; do you have your GRIT together? Now you're wondering, what is GRIT? Simply put, GRIT creates engaged and accountable workforces. It's the foundation to solid relationships; to trust and be trusted; to communicate; to make decisions; to be innovative; productive; and ultimately; to be happy! It's what we need to "tough it out" during challenging times! I know, I know, how did you ever live without it, right?

First, let's start with what GRIT stands for: Generosity, Respect, Integrity and Truth - four rather "soft" characteristics that create a very durable character! Let's look at the core next which is truth.
Truth: Are you honest with yourself? Do you really know who you are, and what you believe in? It's about your authenticity, and your confidence in yourself. It's about not being afraid to be who you really are and not changing who you are to please others. Truth is your core, your authentic self, the same self you were born with and the same self you'll die with.

Integrity: If you're living in integrity, you do what you say you're going to do. When you say you'll be somewhere at a certain time, you make sure you're there. If you promise a report or an evaluation or a discount, you honor your promise. And if you can't, you let the person you promised know as soon as you know, and as soon as you can. Then you do what it takes to "clean up the mess." Being in integrity is also about being whole; being authentic - it relates directly to truth and authenticity. And, it's about completing things, so they can be whole.

Respect: It starts with respecting yourself. (You just started singing Aretha Franklin, didn't you?) If you cannot respect yourself, it's impossible to truly respect someone else - there will always be doubt and mistrust. To respect yourself, you need to be in truth, and in integrity.

When we respect ourselves and others, we can be more objective about others' behaviors. We can listen to their words without attaching too much meaning to them, understanding that they may be motivated by circumstances that have nothing to do with us.

Generosity: When you're authentic, your thoughts and behaviors and words come from a place of good intent. There's no reason to sabotage or feel greedy, or lie or steal. When we respect our self, our intent is helpful, not harmful. And we feel abundance, rather than scarcity. Generosity comes naturally. We become more focused on helping others, whether it's a manager developing her direct reports, a sales person helping his prospect with a solution, or a team member committed to the project.

A workplace where everyone has their GRIT together is a productive and enjoyable place that drives change! People are there because they want to be, not because they have to be. There's a feeling of ownership that naturally has people holding themselves accountable. GRIT creates characters that are tough enough to see it through, to stick it out, and to endure when times are tough. So, let's get going! Let's get our GRIT together! And make it contagious!

Getting your GRIT together pays big dividends if everyone in the organization, from the CEO to the mailroom clerk, is working toward it. Just consider the inefficiency of time-wasting behaviors, and you'll start to see why getting your GRIT together is so important!

How to Deepen Your Voice
By Alex DePue
Who hasn't been embarrassed at one point in their lives because of their voice? For some, the only problem they have is during puberty, when their voice unexpectedly cracks. For others, the problem is a much bigger one.

Your voice is a source of comfort, and in certain situations, it can calm yourself and others. Most importantly, a good sounding voice boosts your confidence, which will help lead to success.

Unfortunately, if your voice isn't good sounding and level in tone, then it will lower your confidence, and self esteem, which will tend to make you shy and withdrawn. The good news is that even if you have an extremely high pitched voice, this can easily be changed.

In your throat, there is a organ called the Larynx. Your Larynx houses your vocal folds (also known as vocal chords). Vibrations in your vocal folds produce a pitch. The pitch can be varied depending on the length of your vocal folds, and the tension in them. Most males tend to have longer vocal folds, with little tension which results in a deepened voice.

To make your voice deeper, you must lengthen your vocal folds, and reduce the tension in them. The muscles which control them are the Cricothyroid muscles, and the Vocalis muscles. So essentially, to deepen your voice, you must control these muscle groups.

At this point I'm sure you are thinking, how do I do this? Is surgery an option? Of course you don't need surgery to deepen your voice. By repeatedly producing certain sounds, and working out the Cricothyroid and Vocalis muscle, you can train your muscles to become used to certain amounts of tension. Once these muscles have adjusted to the change, your vocal chords will lengthen and have less tension in them. This in turn will deepen your voice.

Tips to Get Better Grades and Study Smarter
By Veronica M. De Escobar
Getting better grades in school should not be a difficult task, it also should not be a matter of who is the smarter or dumber person, instead it should be a matter of knowing how to be a smarter student. In this article I will go over some tips to get better grades that will help you understand that to accomplish the grades you want it is not necessary to break your head.

Tips to get better grades and become a better student:

The first tip that I want to give you is very easy to do and you might be already doing it which is taking notes in class. Taking notes in class plus adding colors and high lighting the most important aspects of whatever the teacher says about the subject could save a lot of time when studying for a test or doing your homework. Try your notes to be visual so you can associate them with key points of the material.

The second tip is to work on your homework at school if you can so that when you get home it is done and ready for the next day. This will buy you more than enough time to work on bigger projects that are due in the future. If you have a big project due in a few months, then you can work on it little by little without letting the work accumulate so that when the time comes your project will be ready without too much effort from your part.

The third tip to get better grades is to read your material before each class. This will give you an unfair advantage over the other students and will make you feel more confident in class.

There are many ways that could help you get better grades in school but reality is that you don't need to be the smartest person to do it.

Goals - How They Sabotage Success
By Debra Goldman
You might be thinking, WHAT, how can having a goal possibly sabotage me?

When you set a goal it is something you hope will happen in the future. It might or might not happen. This future oriented focus puts pressure on you. It is an end point you are trying to get to and this pressure will sabotage the outcome. You have no control over the future.

So what can you do? Not set goals? Then how do you create changes in your life?

Here is what you can do. Set an intention. An intention is present oriented. It says in this moment you are putting your action, your attention, your energy, and your will in the direction that you are aiming for. You can focus on the intention right now. For example say your intention is to get a job. Right now, in this moment, you are putting yourself in the direction of a job. Right now, in this moment, you act according to that intention by making a call. All of this is happening here and now and you have the power to make a choice now to act accordingly to that intention.

This gives you the empowerment each moment to focus on your intention and make choices aligned with this. If you do not make the call today, you can refocus on the intention later and act in line with in.

Staying in the now helps. You have choices in the now. The future does not exist yet and what is happening in the future you can influence only through the now.

Set an intention and conceptualize that this means all your attention will be focused in this direction today, the outcome, what happens in the future, will be what it will be.

Now you are off to a good start.
