Goals - How to Achieve the Tough Ones
By Marcus A. Baker
I have been setting goals for most of my adult life. At a point I realized that some were permanently on my goal list. There was a good reason for this: I wasn't achieving them. However I never stopped long enough to find out the real reason why. I was too busy attending goal setting workshops.
Whatever they taught me I applied. I wrote them on little colored cards. I sang them. I visualized them. I read them fifty times. I wrote them in the present. I made them SMART. I reduced the number. I made them more challenging. I made them less challenging. Still, there were some that stubbornly persisted. In fact it got to the stage where I could spit them out while balancing on a tightrope. This is not difficult when you have the same goals year in and year out.
The problem was that all of the "over stayers" were really important to me which is why they continued to make 'The List'. For years I could not understand it. Why did it seem as if everybody else achieved their goals but I couldn't? Still the answer escaped me. So I phrased the question another way, "What did I need to do differently to achieve my goals?" And then the light came on.
I was a medical sales rep. At the beginning of each new year my manager would get us all together, give us five little strips of paper and an envelope. On the strips we had to write five different goals. At least two of them had to relate to our jobs. The others could be any goals in life. Then the strips would be put into the envelope, our name written on the front and returned to our manager for safe keeping.
I only know this because one of my team members told me this is what happened at the goal setting meeting. I was never there.
For five years I always managed to miss this event. Either I had an appointment that couldn't be missed or an urgent task and twice I managed to take annual leave on this day. Strange behavior when on the surface I seemed to be so addicted to setting goals.
At the end of the year, each person was given their envelope back. In turn they would read out their goals and say whether they had achieved them or not. The person would have one week to provide proof to the rest of the team that their goals had been achieved. The team would then decide whether the proof was sufficient or a goal not achieved at all. For all unsuccessful goals they would set a penalty which was usually financially based like buying the rest of the team dinner, donating an amount to a charity and so on. Of course I was never able to participate in these follow up meetings particularly well.
You see the two things I had not ever factored into my goal setting was being accountable and having an incentive, aside from achieving the goal itself. Ideally this should have been enough but we humans are odd creatures. We will go to any lengths to avoid feeling uncomfortable, even though we may desperately want to achieve what we don't yet have. So to my point: I was afraid of failing in front of others but it was fine to fail in front of myself because I could come up with yet another reason for why the goal had not worked then try again the following year, only to fail once more.
I had been setting goals for a long time but had never shared these with anybody else. If I didn't tell others and I didn't succeed, then nobody knew except for me. Consequently I saved myself from feeling bad in front of others. This is something we do at any cost. The sad thing is that once we choose to make this behavior a habit, we entrench ongoing failure for ourselves anyway. We also end up where we didn't want to be. This is how we end up having the same un-achieved goals on our annual list forever.
When you set a goal, especially if it's important and you are afraid of not achieving it, make sure you let a number of people know what your goal is. Your friends are a good starting place. Explain to them how both you and they will know when the goal has been achieved and let them know your deadline.
You will be surprised at how often people will ask you how you are doing. By doing this, not only are you challenging yourself by saying "Hey I can do this." but more importantly, you're also putting your reputation at stake. If you are unsuccessful you will need to face up to the real reason why.
You can add another element to your goal setting and tell your friends about this too. Explain what you will do if you don't achieve the goal. It does not have to always be monetary based. You could agree to work in their garden for a full Saturday, paint their spare bedroom for or buy them a case of French champagne. Whatever you decide, make it something you would prefer not to have to pay for, do or part with.
Achieve your goal and you don't pay a thing. You'll also be much happier than before, wont you? Of course you don't have to enter into the penalty agreement side of things. It's all up to you, much the same as whether you will achieve that goal or not.
Having your friends be part of your support structure means that they are with you along the way, wanting and encouraging you to grow through the experience till you can feel the sense of achievement and you can celebrate success together.
Remember there is no such thing as failure, just learning experiences. It is our responsibility not only to identify that something is not working but find out what we need to do differently to make it happen.
So if you have a goal that has been hanging around for a while and you are serious about achieving it, the time to achieve it is NOW. Price it and share it. How important is it to you? Marcus A. Baker

Difficult Times? The Fastest Way to Get Out of Them!
By Pat L Anderson
All of us experience both good times and bad times throughout our lives. When we are experiencing the hard times we desperately want to get back to the good times. How can we get back to the good times quickly and how can we stay in the good times longer?
Here are some of the things I am learning on my journey as I experience both good and bad times.
Lessons to learn about trials and how to move out of them:
1. Attitude. Our attitude is the catalyst for change. To get out of the trial we are facing we must chose to view bad times as opportunities that may not have presented themselves in any other way. Can you see your difficulty as an opportunity waiting to be discovered? If so, you are on your way to change.
2. Value the lesson. What are you learning as you walk through this valley in life? When I am going through a trial I look for lessons I can learn to improve the person I am. The trial that I'm walking through right now is forcing me to improve my management skills. I am learning lessons in discipline and follow through and in making management a priority!
3. Change your feelings. How you feel depends largely on how you view your situation. If you view the situation you are in as bad for you, the situation will leave you feeling depressed, unable to move out of it. If you view the situation as an opportunity, your response to the situation changes and you begin to see resolutions.
Bad feelings = stuck. Good feelings = solutions.
4. Separate yourself from the problem. Learn to see that the difficult situation does not define who you are. What happens to you does not determine your value. You have value way beyond your circumstances. Do not get down on yourself. Don't become your own enemy. Instead, think clearly and find the solution.
5. Your belief is your relief. You can choose to see your difficulties as blessings: a teacher, an opportunity, a character strengthener, a way to improve your skills. It is when you chose to see things differently you will also see the path out of the bad times you are in.
Difficulties are a fact of life. How you view them makes all the difference in how long you will be stuck in those difficulties. Learn to let the challenges strengthen you and therefore with that strength, you will be better prepared to make the good times last longer!

We Truly Are Co-Creators
By Phil Tanguay
I recently had a wondrous revelation while having some conversations with fellow entrepreneurs. We were talking about success and personal development. How the mere fact of working on yourself can have profound effects on your life in so many ways. Personal development can be anything from attending seminars, workshops, reading books, listening to CD's or even just meditating.
Most people believe that in order to have success in business, for example, requires hard work, tons of hours and sacrifice. When in truth the only things limiting us are ourselves - our thoughts and beliefs. Our doubts, self image and negative self talk prevent us from achieving our goals. We are often our own worst enemies. Contrary to popular belief in our society today, we can easily have anything we desire. It is simply a matter of asking for what we desire and then have belief that the Universe will create it and figure out the "how's". Some of the most powerful tools at our disposal are joy and gratitude. They sound so simple and they are, but way too many of us get caught up in our mental intellect and forget our feelings.
We are beings of pure energy, that's been proven by quantum physics. Our most powerful energy comes from our minds not only as thoughts but as feelings. By allowing ourselves to feel those energies we send a very powerful message to the Universe. Anyone who has been exposed to the Law of Attraction knows that we are not alone in this reality. We are co-creators with the Universe or a higher power. We have the ability to create which is what makes us unique, coupled with the Universe's raw and infinite power we can literally achieve anything.
For those who may not believe that, just grab a history book and see how much exponential growth our society has had in the last 100 years compared to the thousands of years we've been on the planet. We accomplished this with power of our ideas, creations, thoughts and desires - yet it was the Universe that provided the raw materials. This is how we co-create our lives. I refuse to believe there is only one pre-ordained path for us and we are just pawns in a game. We create the game any way we choose, that includes the outcome.
How do we tap into this? Simply be present in the moment, express gratitude for everything you already have in your life. Feel the joy of it and simply ask for what you desire and allow it to unfold. With real belief it will happen. I know it's worked for me so many times. I wanted to be free of a job, able to live and do what I wanted with my life. Be home for my kids a they grow up and have fun with them. I wanted to help people in a positive way, make more money so that I could have more life experiences and travel. I've done all of those things in the last 18 months, all of which I didn't have prior. It can happen for anyone.
