How to Easily Banish Stress For Good

How to Easily Banish Stress For Good
By George Hutton
Your report is overdue. Your bills are past due. Your mortgage is getting out of control. The last time you spoke with your significant other was three days ago. You kids hate you. Every traffic signal turns red when you approach. That pounding that you hear is not the energizer bunny sneaking up behind you, it's your dangerously increasing blood pressure as your heart thumbs incessantly in your ears, reminding of all your troubles at the alarming rate of eighty beats per minute.

But there is a way to stop it all. Now. And it is completely up to you. Nothing to buy, no programs to join. No CD's to listen to for forty-five minutes a day. And certainly no pills to take. All it requires is a few moments of personal time. And you can do this at all those red lights, while your boss is yelling at you, or even right here. Right now.

Stress is not anything new. It has been around since mankind realized that if he strayed into the wrong area of the jungle, a tiger'd eat him. It that sense stress is good. It keeps alive. It keeps from jumping into the polar bear pit at the zoo. Well most of us, anyways. Stress is good when it signals your brain to make a correction. If feel a certain amount of stress while wandering out in the jungle looking for food, it's good. It means be careful, and watch out for tigers or snakes. It's when you start to feels stress over things that are out of your control that it can become a problem.

This technique works when you are in those situations when there really isn't much for you to do to change the situation. This technique has been around for thousands of years. Because it's easy to do, and easy to learn, and easy to teach, there's not a lot of money in it, so you haven't seen it on Oprah or anything. But don't be fooled. It's very powerful.

Ready?

Take a slow, deep breath. Exhale it just as slowly. When you are lungs are completely empty, hold them empty for a few seconds. Wait until you have a strong desire to breath. Not a desperation I'm-gonna-die-if-I-don't-take-a-breath desire, but a desire. You want to really appreciate the breath as you inhale. When you inhale, inhale slowly. Again, not so slowly that you will pass out or anything. Avoid the temptation to gulp in a lungful of air. There's plenty, you can take your time.

Inhale slowly, and really feel the appreciation for the breath. Do this as many times as you can. Until the light turns green, or it's your turn to talk, or the commercial on TV is over. The trick is to focus completely on the appreciation of the air you are inhaling. When you get good at this, start to feel appreciation for all the other physical sensations in your body. Focus completely on any physical sensations that you feel. When you hold your lungs full, blank your mind as much as possible. Then repeat this as many times as you can.

What you are doing is linking a deep feeling of appreciation for your breath and your feelings, with the act of breathing itself. When you practice this, you will start to develop a deep sense of appreciation for breathing alone. Since you breath all day long anyways, you'll begin to develop this deep sense of appreciation as an underlying feeling to all that you are and do. And this is the source of all miracles, love, and true expression. All from a simple breath.

But before you come on over, please take a few moments to play with your breath, and discover the miracle that is you.

If You Are Emotionally Intelligent You Should Be Optimistic, Happy, and Free of Stress
By Dr Jeff Bailey
The factors that comprise emotional intelligence include people's ability to adapt, to manage stress, to deal effectively with interpersonal relationships, to understand themselves, and finally, the theme of today's article, general mood. There are two sub-factors in general mood and they are optimism and happiness. These are two psychological states that are great indicators of the satisfaction that we experience when our life is meaningful and in order. Obviously, if you are optimistic and happy, it is extremely unlikely that you will experience significant levels of personal stress or work stress. Still, regardless of how well things are going in our life, we still have challenges and problems that can diminish our feelings of optimism and happiness.

The guru of optimism is Dr. Martin Seligman, former president of the American Psychological Association, the author of Learned Optimism, and a prolific researcher and author. If you want more detail on Martin's positive psychology check out his website at the University of Pennsylvania. To improve mental health and well-being, Seligman promotes the notion of positive emotions, positive character, and positive institutions. The premise is that rather than focusing on the negative aspects of life, we should be building enabling systems and approaches to augment the happier and positive side of human experience. Through international comparisons, Seligman and colleagues identified five positive personality characteristics that exemplify the best human traits: kindness, fairness, authenticity, gratitude, and open-mindedness (for more details see his 2005 article in American Psychologist).

When people focus on these positive characteristics they become socially responsible, kind, courageous, wise, fair, and optimistic. Being positive and optimistic is not only stress buffering but these personal styles provide a set of social-cognitive behaviors that promote good relationships and a happy and productive life. People who exemplify these positive attributes have lives that are full of zest, gratitude, hope, and love. Seligman suggests that these are strongly related to life satisfaction.

In terms of happiness, Seligman promotes three notions: the pleasant life, the engaged life, and the meaningful life. Someone whose life is pleasant, engaged, and meaningful is likely to be ‘happy’ and happiness leads to better health, improved social relationships, and enhanced career success. Obviously, there is a mutual reciprocity between and among these personality characteristics and life circumstances.

It all sounds simple but the major point is that we are responsible for our own optimism and happiness. If we take a positive, upbeat approach to managing our thoughts and our lives we will have a pleasant, engaged, and meaningful life. Obviously, people who are optimistic and happy manage stress well, have reduced levels of stress and anxiety, and have more fulfilling lives.

Controlling Your Mind Power - Kick Stress Or Stress Will Continue to Kick You
By Harold L Lowe
What was the past six months like for you, or the past year? Was that period filled with enthusiastic exhilaration based on a positive outlook or was it filled with worry, frustration, and misery? Did your present philosophy guide you to stay focused on the things and circumstances you desire or was your mind brimming with apprehension, fear and stress?

Far too many people spend most of their lives under the seemingly omnipresent umbrella of stress, never fully realizing the damage that is done to both their physical and mental health. Perhaps you are one of them. Stress is also a huge block to their having more of the lives they desire Apprehension, fear, pessimism, nervous tension, stress, and other negative emotions are like death knells to attempts to improve life outcomes.

It is my deep belief that no one wants to carry around those feelings and states of mind. No one likes to feel stressed out all of the time. Unfortunately, most people have been conditioned to believe that they are suppose to have those negative feelings. For them, that is just the way life is. Most of them simply have not been presented with tools or processes that they feel they can use to extricate themselves from such conditioning.

Now I am not an expert in telling you (or anyone else) what you need to do to better your life conditions. I am not inside your body. I do not know the myriad of thoughts that cross your screen of consciousness each day. I have not walked in your shoes. I can only share with you some of my experiences, what tools I have used successfully, the process for using them, and to state emphatically that my life outcomes have remarkably improved.

What any of this may or may not mean to you is entirely up to you. You must live for you. I have barely begun to overcome some of this stuff in my own life. One thing is clear, however. Stress and other negative emotions must be subdued and held at bay if life outcomes are going to improve.

One of the things I feel you should learn to do is relax your body-mind unit. Stress thrives on tension, especially nervous tension. Without the ability to relax, attempts at controlling your mind power and bringing it under your conscious control will almost certainly, allegorically, be bounced right back to you by your self image. It will be like attempting to plant a vegetable garden without preparing the soil. The antidote for stress is the ability to consciously relax at will.

There are a number of books, audio CDs, and DVDs available at your local library to aid and instruct you in learning the enormously beneficial skill of relaxation. I strongly suggest you make a trip to your library, pick one and begin immediately practicing an exercise or exercises to find one that suits you.

When you find the one with which you wish to work, practice it, work with it until you can relax your body-mind and remain relaxed for extended periods of time. In truth your mind never relaxes because it never tires, is never nervous, and is never tense, but I think you get my point.

You will soon notice that when your body is relaxed, your mind activity will also slow down a bit. It is during periods of physical and mental relaxation that your self image is best prepared to allow positive thoughts, images and affirmations to be accepted.

This I know for sure. You can claim or re-claim control of your own mind power. You are the most miraculous of all living beings on earth. You are the owner of a mind that is so stupendous, that as you truly begin controlling your mind power and consciously using it, there is no dream that you can dream that you cannot achieve.
