How to Be Successful When Things Go Wrong

How to Be Successful When Things Go Wrong
By Carroll Emerson
Have you ever started a project and got very excited about it only to have it not work out as you planned? Have you ever been disappointed over the failure of something you want to do? How can you be successful when things go wrong?

Certainly none of us like to fail at anything. However, when things do not go as planned, and you can bet that they won't, it is important to remember that this does not equate failure. Failure only occurs when we give up! Our team may not win the World Series, Stanley Cup or Super Bowl this year but next year is always there. Sports team never give up in this pursuit. Year after year the eagerly are seeking the BIG prize. It should be the same with us. Therefore, in order to succeed, especially when things go wrong, there are 2 things we need: purpose and determination!

A purpose is different than a plan. A purpose is the end result, the foundation of every plan we make. Plans can change but if our purpose remains resolute, then success will eventually be ours. Purpose allows us to reformulate plans when they change. For example, consider the purpose of going to a baseball game. Since I live in SE Georgia, let's imagine we are going from Savannah, GA, to Atlanta to go see a Braves game. We make our plans, set a date, decide a travel route and we head out. What can happen along the way? Car trouble, accidents, delays, road construction or any number of other things that can delay or alter our plans. However, our purpose to go to the game remains the same. If we do not give up in our purpose then we are going to find another route to get to the Braves game. It can be saddening at times when plans fall apart and sometimes we may be ready to throw in the towel. How can we be successful in keeping our purpose alive? Determination

Determination helps us to stayed focused on our purpose when plans fail. However, determination is not automatic. Determination has to be fed in order to do its job. To be successful in being determined, therefore, there are at least 3 things needed to stay determined. Let's consider them briefly one at a time.

1) Education - When I speak of education, I am speaking of appropriate education. the more we learn about something, the more we want to learn and we get excited about it. When we get excited, we move forward. Education then is necessary. Note that I said "appropriate education" and not a college education. In some cases a college education is necessary depending on our goals, but the key is obtaining the right kind of education. For example, if you want to be an electrician, would you learn from a plumber? Certainly not. Therefore, whatever our goal, big or small, it requires the right kind of education to feed our determination.

2) Motivation - It is necessary to stay motivated in order to be determined. Without motivation everything dies. Motivation is an emotional force that drives us to be successful. It drives us to accomplish what we set out to do. When plans fail, as they will, we have to have a STRONG motivation to fight the discouragement. What motivates you? Why are you doing what it is you are doing? Why do you have the goals you have made for yourself? What makes you "go for it"? Motivation is based on one of two things: "want" and "need". Some people are motivated out of a great desire to satisfy personal desires while others are motivated simply out of necessity. In either case, clearly defining why we have a goal will help us feed our motivation.

3) Rewards - Why do we get a diploma after graduation? Isn't it true that in a very basic sense it is nothing more than a piece of paper? True, but we attach value to that piece of paper. It represents accomplishment. It is visible evidence and a reminder of an accomplishment. The same can be said for trophies, certificates, plaques, etc. We receive these things as rewards for a job well done. The same can be said for other types of rewards like a "thank you" from a satisfied customer, an "I love you" from a child or dear friend, a paycheck for a week's worth of work. Rewards come in all kinds of shapes and sizes but they are necessary to stay determined. They give us something physical that we can attach meaning to as a representation of our goals and purpose. What reward do you seek? Are you determined to get it?

Purpose and determination are necessary to be successful in any endeavor we undertake. Without them, we will surely give up when plans fail, or worse yet, never even set out on our journey. Have a purpose, be determined and never give up!

Creating Balance in Life Can Lead to a High Income
By Raymond Aaron
Many of our lives are filled with a variety of things that require our attention. Work, family, friends, our home, and our children are all things we must devote our time to. Often, one or two areas of our lives occupy more time than we should devote to them. Believe it or not, having a balanced life can lead to a high income.

We can identify parts of our lives that consume the majority of our time. Most of us work for a living, and we have families. These two are major consumers of our time, and justifiably so. The key is how many hours we have during the day to devote to each of these areas.

Many of us get caught up in the rat race, and spend more time than we should at work, or working. After all, we need to provide for our families; therefore we work hard at what we do to make sure we provide the best lifestyle possible for ourselves and our families.

Work is important, but it is an unequal partnership. For most of us, the only way to earn more income is to work more hours. Our wage will increase because we either earn more from being on the clock longer, or we make more sales or bonuses or whatever. This is a classic scenario of trading time for dollars.

The thing that makes this arrangement uneven is the fact that there are only so many hours we can work in a day's time. It is a catch twenty-two because we want to do as well as we can at work, but we know that the more time we spend there, the less time we have to spend with our family. We also know that it is close to impossible to enjoy the things we are able to purchase because we are always at work.

We then begin to resent our jobs and sometimes our employers because we devote so much time to work, and we do not leave ourselves much time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Our performance begins to suffer. We become less productive, and when we get home, we are in no mood to do much with our families.

This cycle can be broken by taking a few simple steps. First, we should choose to do work that we love. If we love what we do, we will more than likely be good at it, and be naturally productive in what we do. We will also be more apt to earn a better income, not based on the time we spend on the job, but how good we are at what we chose to do.

By enjoying our work, we become efficient, and free up time to spend enjoying the life we provide for our family, with our family. We will be able to spend more time at home, which will further the cause of creating a healthy balance between work and family.

By creating a balanced life, we can easily use the momentum we gain from doing what we love to earn a high income. We are compelled still to do well in order to provide for our family, but we are extremely efficient in what we do because we love it. This balance becomes a self-perpetuating cycle that can allow you to make a high income.

How to Achieve Authentic Success
By Vivian Eisenecher
Earl Nightingale, one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th Century, said in The Strangest Secret that "Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal," a worthy ideal being a goal of great value.

Being wealthy is not the same as being successful. Success is not the accumulation of inert matter. Money is merely a resource-albeit a powerful one-to be used either for good or for evil. Just look at what happened on 9/11. It took a lot of money to cause such massive destruction and human anguish. So, it's not what we've got that makes us successful, but what we continue to do with what God has given us. Money is a means, not an end. It only counts when it's put to good purpose.

Authentic success is not a destination. It is a PROCESS that includes: Perseverance, Resilience, Openness, Compatibility, Enthusiasm, Self-esteem, and finally, Spirituality.

Perseverance

The ability to stick with a project or situation until it is completed regardless of setbacks and disappointments. Nothing is mastered in one giant leap forward. It usually takes planning, preparation and practice. It requires modifications and adjustments in both thought and action, not just once, but over and over again.

The ability to go on and do something, even if we don't feel like doing it, will take us one step closer to our goal. To be a function of our dream, and not a function of our immediate desires or impulses, will empower us to reach our potential. If we want to be successful, we will have to work patiently and persistently, taking a step at a time in order to continually grow.

Resilience

The ability to roll with the punches, to deal effectively with life's adversities.

When we're forced to take a step down that famous ladder we all like to climb, in order not to be defeated we must rest, regain our balance, rethink our previous tries, and get a second wind. We can think of these setbacks as guideposts, not hitching posts. We can use them as stepping stones, not stumbling blocks. Failures give us the opportunity to regroup, but we must not become stuck. When denied or rejected, we must not cry so hard that our vision is blinded. Failure is merely a part of the learning process, and a much better teacher than success.

Openness

(This includes open-mindedness - being receptive to other arguments or ideas and open-endness - not rigorously fixed.)

We forget that failures can sometimes catapult us to far greater heights of success than we ever dreamed. But to continue to climb to new heights, we must remain open-minded.

To remain successful, we must consider any success as an open-ended project. It is a fluid, evolving experience, not a one-time event. By looking at it as temporary, we get a better long-range view of it.

Compatibility

The ability to exist together in harmony.

Synergy (synthesized energy) is the exciting concept whereby blended energies produce magnified outcomes. We achieve our goals in direct proportion to the synergistic affiliations that we nurture.
Success is about winning professionally and personally by building up others. Success is a lifetime task of collaboration with other human beings.

Enthusiasm

The state of being inspired.

Enthusiasm is one of the most empowering and attractive characteristics we can have. The level of our talent isn't nearly as important as the intensity of our passion.

Pursuing our passion will sustain us when no external rewards seem evident.

When we enjoy doing something, we make it a priority. We discipline ourselves to be able to include it in our lives. We make sacrifices in other areas of our life in order to be able to concentrate on our passion. And sacrifice is usually the only difference between those who succeed and those who don't.

Self-Esteem

Having a self-worth more powerful than any rejection or failure that we encounter enables us to move forward with confidence. With high self-esteem, it is difficult for failures to defeat us. We can accept setbacks and move on. This kind of self-worth is essential for continued success.

Spirituality

Sensitivity or attachment to a higher power.

What does spirituality have to do with success?

By adhering to God's principles on a daily basis, we exponentially increase our chances of success. Nothing can compare to the power derived from our trusting acceptance of His gentle perfection.

Success is best achieved under His direction. Fulfilling our uniqueness within His moral and ethical guidelines will bring us success upon success. Every success empowers us for more success.

Authentic success is a direct result of adherence to God's plan, which includes: Perseverance, Resilience, Openness, Compatibility, Enthusiasm, Self-esteem and Spirituality.

The Key to Success
By Bridgette Mongeon
It seems elementary, but one of the basic keys to success is right between your ears-your thoughts! It is true we are our own worst enemy, or at least our thoughts can be. Our thoughts can set us back, keep us in the same place, or cause us to soar to the skies.

Did you ever purchase a certain color car, say red, and then all of a sudden notice all of the red cars? It is because we are attracted to what we are thinking or what we are looking for. So, it makes perfect sense that if we think positive successful thoughts that it will help us obtain them. Positive thinking also motivates us to action. It feeds our desires and keeps us going.

We have all heard of self-fulfilling prophecies. It is kind of like when you are learning to ride a bike. You soon learn not to concentrate on the telephone pole and or even think about hitting or not hitting it, in fact the more you think about it the more certainly you will hit it. Instead look ahead into the distance and to your goal, think happy positive thoughts and enjoy the ride. Make a decision to continue positive thoughts throughout your day, and your week and watch the difference in your motivation and your achievements.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "A man is what he thinks about all day long." My question to you is, "What are you thinking?"

"Do, or do not. There is no 'try.'" Jedi Master Yoda
