=============================

Keeping up with inflation was the challenge of the 1970s. As prices rose, wages increased and the middle class trod water to keep their heads dry.
When we entered our recent recession, inflation was the least of our worries - we needed jobs, increased demand for goods to spur manufacturing, a sense of security, and faith that our hard work would be eventually rewarded. As corporate downsizing and the offshore job exodus continued, we learned to work harder and longer to keep our hard won status.
The economists and political pundits trumpeted the end of the tight economy and the expansion of manufacturing, housing, tourism. Sure, the jobs never came back on the scale predicted, but there was a degree of comfort in the slowdown of layoffs and restructuring. Beneath the rhetoric of tax cuts to jump start consumer spending and a housing market running amok on historically low interest rates, the quiet increase in personal bankruptcy filings and the working class slide into poverty was dismissed as a political "sour grapes" issue that had little bearing in a country intent on reorganizing the entire world as a mirror of itself.

Job Change Can Be Scary--Unless You Have a Success Plan!

Every so often we're hit by the urge to change jobs. Over time the urge matures into a realization that the time is right. But the thought of letting go of a good-paying, secure job is truly scary. The solution to this dilemma is easy to report but tough to carry out. Still, thousands have been in the same situation--torn between staying and leaving.

Do your homework before you make any final decisions. Here are some guidelines to help ease the transition.

1. Make a list of everything you've got going for you. This includes all your strengths, capabilities and assets. Do NOT focus exclusively on your work history or job descriptions. Do NOT prepare a resume at this point. It's too limiting.

2. Select a range of organizations that are consistent with your capabilities and interests without considering whether or not they have job openings.

3. Identify the person you would report to if you went to work there. Presumably this is the person who would be making a hiring decision about you.

4. Discover innovative ways to meet informally face-to-face with this person . . . NOT an interview. The best resource for arranging this is to get introduced by people you know . . . friends, neighbors, relatives, religious leaders and fellow members, past and current co-workers and former bosses, former classmates, etc.

5. Meet with these prospective employers in non-interview settings . . . strictly for the purpose of gaining insight into the organization and getting their advice. In that context you can make some intelligent decisions about what's appropriate for you.

It can be a very exciting time when you approach job change in an enlightened way. The secret to success is to explore a range of options. When you do, you will discover that you are qualified for many more opportunities than your resume would allow you to believe.

The goods news is that there is available a proven system that can take you through the complete process and have you entertaining one or two job offers in as little as 14 days! ***

Building Successful Work Relationships--Playing In The Same

Remember playing in your childhood sandbox? If you enjoyed being outside for most of the day, you could play in the sandbox for hours on end shaping and pouring the sand or mixing it with a little water to form a castle or hill. Children enjoy playing with sand or dirt and learn at an early age how to make the most of this play time activity. Playing in a sandbox usually starts out as a solitary exercise; however, smart parents know that in order to develop their child s ability to relate to others, another child or two must be introduced into that same sandbox. This is when the fun truly begins.

When children play together in the same sandbox:

- They learn to trust each other.
- Their ability to be gentle, kind and considerate is developed.
- Friendships are initiated and nurtured.
- Positive interaction increases and selfishness decreases.
- They find creative ways to work together, satisfying their curiosity and increasing their enjoyment and fun.

You re Never Too Old for the Sandbox
There s a tremendous amount of pressure as we grow older to learn to act our age (whatever that means). In fact, most people consider age a number not an indication of vitality, health or maturity. Nevertheless, too many of us leave the things of childhood behind us. This is both good and bad. It is good to leave childish behavior behind, but bad when we discard many childlike behaviors that can make us successful adults. One such childlike behavior is learning how to develop reliable relationships with others through experiences in the same sandbox that teach us how to cooperate, exchange ideas, and communicate.

When we play together in the same sandbox at work:
- It is important to know and understand the rules and limitations of play; but when we take the time to do so, we find that it is fun to mix with others, develop positive peer relationships naturally, and to encourage a spirit of lighthearted camaraderie.

- We learn to practice balanced self-control the right combination of expressing our opinions and feelings when facing difficult or unexpected events. Our sensitivity to and concern for others is demonstrated as we attempt to understand their perspectives.

- We willingly let down our guards and shift our mindsets to try new and fresh ways of doing old tasks. We bask in the energy boost that results from experimentation, creativity, innovation, and learning new skills.

- Our communication skills are stimulated and enhanced. Bridges are built between people who were once estranged. Conflict surfaces and is resolved.

How to Have More FUN in Your Work Sandbox
1. Think of yourself playing with your co-workers in the same sandbox (Don t turn into a skeptic on me now).

2. Share your creative ideas for improving your team s effectiveness with the entire team; then together select one on which to experiment.

3. Make sure to include every member of your team in some part of the experiment. Develop receptiveness and tolerance of others.

4. Solicit their feedback on a regular basis and bring any challenges or obstacles to the entire team for resolution. Don t be afraid to proactively exchange differences in opinion. These are healthy if allowed to surface early. They can be destructive if allowed to fester.

5. Celebrate every accomplishment no matter how small. Little wins recognized as they occur communicate a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, build confidence and turn an average team into a highly motivated one.

6. Play dynamically and interact enthusiastically with each other. It has been said that a burden shared is a burden halved. So, have some fun in your work together.

7. Select another experiment and begin the process all over again.

If you re not having fun at work while playing in the same sandbox with co-workers, you re not doing it right. Give it another try. I think you ll be pleased that you did.***

Forensic Science Careers - Real Life CSI

Advances in scientific technology in examining crimes scenes have turned forensic science into a high demand and rapidly growing career field. Adding to the popularity of forensic science jobs are TV shows like CSI Crime Scene Investigators. This article will serve as an overview for a career in forensic science that includes many subcategories like forensic science consultants, fingerprint technicians, fingerprint examiners, forensic investigators and evidence technicians. Forensic Scientist Job Description

Forensic scientists investigate crimes by collecting crime scene evidence and using the natural sciences to analyze the data they recover. They generally work 40 hours each week in a forensic science laboratory. Forensic science technicians are often required to go to the crime scene and collect the physical evidence that can be found. They work closely with government officials and police detectives in order to help solve crimes.

Most forensic scientists specialize in certain types of evidence such as DNA analysis, firearm research and weapons testing, examining fiber, hair, tissue, or body fluid substances. They often work with chemicals, fluid samples and firearms that demand safety precautions. However, the risk of harm or contamination within these working conditions is minimal.

Salary Ranges / Job Outlook for a Forensic Scientist

Of all science technicians, forensic scientists currently earn the second highest annual salary. In 2002 the average pay rate for a forensic scientist was $19.73 per hour, or approximately $41,000. The low ten percent of this scale earned around $12.06 per hour - $25,100 yearly. The highest ten percent earned around $31.49 per hour - $65,500 yearly. However, the pay range depends upon factors like type of specialty, years of experience, type of employment and location.

In the United States, the employment rate for forensic scientists is expected to grow steadily over the next decade. Current Nationwide trends estimate that job openings for forensic scientists will rise approximately 19 percent by 2012. These numbers indicate more than 360 job positions opening up each year. In 2002, forensic scientists held approximately 8,400 job positions. These scientists work mainly for State and local governments, but keep close professional relationships with police investigators and other crime experts.

Employment rates are dependent upon field development, government spending abilities, local population growth and the locality s crime rate. Job growth for forensic scientists can be attributed to rapid scientific and technological advances. Researchers are developing and perfecting new experimental methods every day.

This will cause forensic science departments to fill the technician positions this research will create. Currently, the number of skilled, experienced applicants is low. These low numbers mean that forensic scientists working for State and government departments are highly likely to receive positive employment prospects and benefits.

Education / Getting Started

Although organizations seek applicants with bachelor s degrees, many employers will hire candidates who have completed specific training programs, obtained certification or possess an associate s degree. Training and certification programs generally take only two years to complete and will earn graduates the opportunity for a career in forensic science. Programs with a focus in criminal investigations and criminal justice can help prospective applicants specialize as forensic consultants, fingerprint technicians, forensic investigators, laboratory technicians and fingerprint examiners.

There are various courses that must be taken to qualify as a forensic science technician. Some important courses include chemistry, computers and electronics, law and government, public safety, mathematics, writing and communications. Prospective scientists must have good decision making skills as well as written and oral expression. Additional skills include inductive reasoning, information ordering, critical thinking and the ability to identify patterns and details. Because forensic scientists work in crime scenes that may be stressful and emotionally draining, they must be able to control their emotions and handle situations that can be distressful.

Employers usually look for people with previous forensic experience. Many forensic science technicians begin in entry level trainee positions that help them gain job experience. Another good way to get experience is through internship programs that are offered by numerous schools. Forensic scientists also start out as forensic laboratory technicians and after developing those skills, advance to crime scene technicians.

Advancements in science and technology continue to improve the accuracy and importance of crime scene evidence in prosecuting criminals and defending the accused. Training to be a forensic scientist will put you on the front line of this interesting and necessary analysis. ***

TIPS FOR LAWYERS

It's that time of year where we all feel enormous pressure to make resolutions for personal and professional improvement. Lawyers are no exception! The problem is too often we set the new goals without a real plan of how we're going to avoid reverting to our old habits!

Habits can be a friend or foe. Think of a habit as a pattern of behavior. Successful habits can help us to achieve success, while other habits undermine our efforts to achieve. Here is a great exercise for getting rid of old habits and replacing them with habits designed to help you to more effectively achieve your objectives.

STEP ONE: List 3 or more habits that are currently holding you back from achieving your goals and describe how these habits negatively impact your life. EXAMPLE:
Habit: Spend too much time on socializing during the work day.
Impact: Always playing catch up in order to meet deadlines causing everyone to stress out. Makes me seem unprofessional and unfocused.

STEP TWO List successful habits you will choose to adopt in place of the "bad" habits and the benefits of adopting the new habit

EXAMPLE:

Successful New Habit: Develop effective time management strategy that includes limit socializing with other lawyers in the office.
Benefits: Increase productivity, meet or exceed billables, decrease stress.

STEP THREE

Create a 3 step action plan to jumpstart each new habit. Be specific, pick a start date, a completion date and begin.

EXAMPLE:

Action Plan

1) Develop Time Management System that fits my work-style.
2) Create blocks in the day where I close my door and work for 2 hours without interruption.
3) To satisfy my desire to socialize, schedule lunches and after-hour meetings with colleagues so I stay connected.
4) Keep conversations to 3 minutes or less.

Start Date: January 7 Completion date: January 17th

Implementing new habits, new patterns of behavior, will take time. Stay committed to the process and you ll soon achieve your desired results. ***

How to Find Opportunity

Does business opportunity pass you by? Do your fondest dreams of financial success remain unfulfilled? Are material success and happiness concepts that have no substance in your life?

If the answer to any of the above is yes, count yourself among the majority of humanity. If the truth be told, and it will in this article, the number one reason why so much of the world's population lives an unfulfilled life is because they have said no to opportunity. The reason so many have said no is simple - they fail to recognize opportunity when it appears. The vast majority of people wait for opportunity to arrive but they only look for exactly their heart's desire of the moment.

Opportunity is most often a doorway opening to ever more opportunity While it is true that an opportunity may arise that is exactly what you hope, long and yearn for, it seldom happens. If it did we would be living in a magic kingdom where all dreams are realized and presented with flair by a saintly fairy godperson. We do not live in that world. Opportunity is much like the air we breathe it is everywhere and it is free. It may not come in the form that we expect, but it comes everyday. It is a part of us. Perhaps you seek the opportunity for a better job. It can be found every time you have that particular thought. The thought itself is that very opportunity, you must take the next step.

For example, if indeed a better job opportunity is what you want, each time that thought arises, then immediately begin to think how you would react if the opportunity did arise. Seize the thought and the fruition of that opportunity will become a reality in your life. Perhaps the better job is the very job you have now.

Would your supervisor, or boss, recognize your abilities and ingenuity if you presented her, or him, a well conceived and well written memo on how your job, company, product, etc. could be made more profitable, more efficient, more pleasant, or more salable? Most supervisors, bosses, managers, etc. are open to thoughtful and honest suggestions that will better the company because it will better them as well. However, refrain from disparaging comments about your current job, or comment. Do not dwell upon any negative aspects of any condition, or person in your memo. Rather make your memo a concise and energetic effort toward the good for all concerned.

Without a doubt, many managers, supervisors, or bosses will not be receptive to an approach such as this, most because they cannot be. We do not live in a perfect world and neither do they. Yes, some people delight in stifling the progress of others. How can this be overcome? It can be overcome in the same manner as virtually any impasse, or problem, can be overcome - by energetic progress toward the good.

For example, perhaps the company's competition, or the supervisor's competition quite frankly would be keen to read your thoughts on how to better, not only your job, but the others within the company as well. The above is but one small example of how opportunity is omnipresent and almost always disguised. In the example above you have seized the opportunity as it presented itself within the mere thought of your desire to have a better job. If you indeed begin constructing a well-planned memo, or letter, or email such as in the example above, you have taken the first step along the journey of making the opportunity a reality.

What you cannot do, however, is say no to opportunity. If you entirely believe that your lot will never improve, it will not. If you do not act in some positive manner - first to recognize opportunity, second to advance it within your life - you will have defeated opportunity. No is a very powerful word, it is even more powerful when you say it to yourself with conviction. Defeat has many disciples and many adherents; billions of them are alive right now.

Stay clicked to This Is Info. Opportunity is a core concept of life. An ongoing mission of This Is Info is to make opportunity a reality for any who yearn for it. In our next segment, we will continue with more of the example of opportunities presented by merely wanting a better job.***

Evaluating Job Offers for Teaching Abroad

You have decided on teaching abroad so you are off on the job hunt. Aside from the obvious considerations such as what country to work in and what training/qualifications to obtain; there are other things a teachers should consider when looking at potential job offers.

There are many factors a teacher considers which will affect whether they accept a position. The most obvious factor would be the content of the position. What is the school asking of you as a teacher? You must ask yourself if the job is interesting and fits into your career plans as a teacher.

The person you will be working for is also an important consideration so you must take the time to talk to them either via email or phone. It would also be beneficial to ask to speak to other teachers from the school to find out their impressions. Knowing what the job is and whom you will be working with are the first step in deciding whether to pursue it further.

Some may say that the most important consideration would be salary and benefits but these should be a secondary consideration to what you want to do and who you will be working with. Regardless of the salary paid, most people will not stay at a position where they feel unsatisfied or have no growth. In addition, the people you work with or for have an enormous impact on your job satisfaction.

However, when considering salary and benefits, do not focus as much on the starting salary but rather on the potential for growth and increases. Does the school have growth potential for you as a professional? Do they spell out cost-of-living increases and meritorious raises? Benefits are other areas that can supplement a position where the starting salary is not as good as you would have wished. Get a list of benefits from the company and formulate any questions you may have regarding them so that you can better discuss the position with management and other teachers at the school.

Another factor that may come into play with many teachers when evaluating a position is the resources provided by the school. Teachers spend a large majority of their time preparing for upcoming lessons. This requires readily available resources such as teacher books, computer, printer, internet access, and preferably a reference library. In addition, there should be a work area set aside for teachers to plan and prepare.

You should also look at whether the school already has a set curriculum/syllabus and student books because you may be asked to help to create these resources for your school year if they are not provided. I have known many teachers that have felt the need to move on because of the demands of planning for a school year without adequate resources.

To help you find that perfect (or near perfect) job, you should ask these questions to all prospective employers:

1. What is the salary?
2. How many months is the contract?
3. Do/Can you sponsor me for all paperwork, including teacher's license, work permit, and visa extension?
4. How soon can you get this paperwork processed?
5. How many hours will I be teaching?
6. What kind of insurance is on offer?
7. When are the starting and ending times for work?
8. About how many events a month are teachers required to attend outside normal working hours (teachers' meetings, parents' meetings, school festivals, seminars, etc.)?
9. Does the school have/provide books?
10. Does the school have whiteboards or chalkboards?
11. Does the school provide all teaching materials needed? What are the items provided?
12. Does the school require that I attend/teach a summer camp?
13. Is there a discipline policy? What is it and how is it enforced?
14. What are the details of contract "extras" such as:

a. Resigning bonuses

b. Biannual or annual plane tickets to visit home

c. Housing allowances (if no housing allowance then ask about help finding accomodations along with cost in the school area)

d. Internet access both in and outside the school

e. Raise schedules

Searching for a position is difficult. After spending many hours on a search, making a careful decision regarding a job offer is important. Getting an offer does not necessarily mean you should take the job. Most employers will not expect you to make a decision on the spot. You will probably be given a few days to a week to make up your mind.

If they are unable to provide you with the time to make a decision then you should not consider this as a viable position. On the other hand, if you decide to go with a school without finding out the proper information, don't blame the school when the position turns out not to be what you expected or wanted. Weighing the advantages and disadvantages of the job will help you make a more informed decision, rather than deciding on impulse. ***

Career planning necessary to work out

Career planning is one of those things you don t learn about in school but what decisions you make with your career affect your future in more ways than one. No matter what choices you make regarding your career, make sure you have it worked out before you step into any interviews.
Your interview is your prospective employer s first impression of you. How you sell yourself career wise is how your employer will see you for the duration of your employment with him or her. Don t sabotage your own career.

Don t be unprepared for the interview question, So where do you want to be in 5 years.

Here are some of the ways that decisions regarding your career affect you:

You salary depends on your career decisions. You need to start as high as possible and get as high as possible pay raises, both at one company and in between jobs. Remember that you re the only one that cares about your salary. Your education should complement your career. You should always be taking some form of education whether it is in a traditional class or in a distance learning program.

Education, strategically taken, can help advance career or give you more career options. Your career path. If you don t plan strategically where you want to be in five years, you ll still end up somewhere in five years. Right? Better that your career path follows your career goals than somebody else s. Interviewing shouldn t be all about what you want; who would want to hire somebody like that? But if your interviewer asks about your career plans, make sure you have something prepared to say.

Don t let your interviewer decide your fate at your new company. Have a clear vision of where you want to be in five years and convey it to your interviewer. Then shut up and listen to what your interviewer has to say.
Change your life, change your career and get a new job! ***
