Accountability is King

Accountability is King - #1 Motivational Support Tool to Keep You Honest & on Track
By Denise Hart
Have you ever told someone you'd do something and then as it got closer to the time to do the thing you felt bad because you weren't keeping your word? Well, that's the power of accountability in action.

I like to use accountability as a motivation support because it helps to keep me honest. In fact I'm so into it that the other day when I told someone that I was going to run 6 miles and then only ran 5.5 miles I told them that I didn't run the whole six. They shrugged their shoulders like it was no big deal, but it mattered to me that I was forthcoming and truthful about what actually occurred.

You can use accountability to help you stay on track with virtually all of your goals. There are lots of online accountability support groups if you want to go that route.

You can also go the old fashioned route of getting yourself an accountability partner. This is typically a two way partnership. You are there to hold the other person accountable to what they've stated and they do the same for you.

An accountability partner works well for lots of things like studying, weight loss, eating right, working out. I'm going to start intensely training for a marathon and I'll be using my accountability partner to help me stay focused and committed to my goal.

You can set up a time where you will check in with each other via phone or email once a week or even daily if that schedule will suit the needs of you both. During your communication you can keep it brief and even set a rule that the check in time is only for sharing whether or not you've kept your word. You don't want to fall into using that time to discuss the difficulty you may be having with staying accountable.

If you've fallen off the horse, just get back up, get on and go forward again with persistence in hand.

No matter what route you take, whether it be a partner or an online tool, you can use accountability to help you stay focused and committed to doing the things you want to do. It's a terrific tool to add to your motivation solutions tool box.

Motivation Tips - 5 Ways to Stay Excited
By Anthony D Carter
Excitement will take you a long ways towards hitting your goals. After hearing a good motivational speaker most of us feel like we can accomplish anything that we want to do. Unfortunately that motivation and excitement does not last. Here are five ways to stay excited as you are working towards hitting your goals.

1 - Keep your eyes on the prize. Focus on your desired result every minute of the day. Never let discouragement or doubt replace the excitement that you feel when you think about your dream. See what you want clearly in your mind's eye. Make a concerted effort to remind yourself that every action that you take has a direct impact on the eventual achievement of your goal.

2 - Put events into their proper perspective. Remember you have a choice as to what you choose to focus on. Just because you got a flat tire and a speeding ticket on the way to the gym does not mean that you are going to fail to hit your goal of losing 15 pounds before the spring. Take the bad circumstances in stride. Get accustomed to switching your focus when doubt, worry or frustration tries to creep into your mind. Go back to your intention of hitting your goal and get excited about taking your next steps.

3 - Do not listen to naysayers. When someone expresses doubt or pessimism in regards to your goal achievement do not take that in. So called friends and some family members are frequently your biggest doubters. They knew you when you were at some of the weakest moments in your life. They also remember you when you were immature. So it is hard for them to let go of those images. But do not let their comments drain your motivation. And in regards to negative people just consider the source. It doesn't matter what they say anyway. Do not give their comments a second thought. Stay excited and keep moving forward.

4 - Make it fun. One of the best ways to stay motivated is to treat your goal achievement process like a game. I do this all of the time. When I finish a task or activity related to my goal sometimes I react with a fist pump like Tiger Woods. I say to myself "Yes! Now that's what I'm talking about." It may seem silly to some people, but it's fun. Enjoy the journey. It is easy to stay motivated when you are enjoying what you are doing.

5 - Record your growth. Journal instances when you discover that you have grown emotionally, mentally and or spiritually. It is important that you record these occurrences because we generally forget them. We are so busy and focused on getting the desired result that we neglect to recognize overall improvement. It is very inspiring to read about moments during your journey when you realized you moved to a higher level of thinking or acting. When you read journal entries about your positive mental shifts and personality improvements you get excited. That is one of the benefits of goal achievement. You grow as a person on the way to getting what you want. Use a journal to take snapshots of that growth. When you read those entries they motivate you to keep doing more.

The Balance of (Personal) Power
By Steve Wickham
Momentum is a crazily powerful thing. Reliving the Piper Alpha disaster (6 July 1988) recently, it was said that one of the key reasons why the two associated rigs (Tartan and Claymore) didn't shut down their colossal gas feeds to the stricken Piper, feeding the fire and explosions, was due to the momentum of production versus the incredible efforts required in regaining full production (momentum) after an emergency shutdown sequence.

167 people died as a result of the Piper Alpha disaster.[1]

Momentum, once lost, requires enormous costs and efforts to regain it.

Personally, it was apparent to me recently, with struggles 're-starting' a healthy diet regime, that my dreams were awakening me to the past. In the early days of regaining the momentum we're constantly reminded how weak we presently are, both consciously and subconsciously, and how tenuous the journey ahead is. Yet we best continue one leg in front of the other, focused single-mindedly on our goal.

I've found my dreams are a very real indicator of my subconscious mind's status with regard to my present (at the time) momentum. If I'm dreaming things consistent with my goals, I'm trending well and the journey ahead is clear of potential icebergs.

There are, of course, apparitions and sometimes--say if we've quit smoking, and we wake up in a lather of sweat after having dreamt that we were smoking, or if we're married and we dreamt of being with someone else--we need to put these things behind us, using them as reminders of, and goads toward, the real dreams ahead... our goals.

By and large, dreams show us where we are, or where we could be, and where our fears might lie. Having reformed ourselves from certain vices doesn't mean we don't still fear them. A healthy level of fear is a positive, motivating thing.

Progress is an amazing construct. We can look back at the momentum we've build up. Keeping it going is the easy thing provided we remain focused one day at a time. Stop it, and like the throughput of an oil production platform and we can take weeks, months and even years to get 'production' up and momentum going again. Ask any one-time reformed smoker; especially the ones who never again gave it up , or any of us who lost weight only to regain it again.

Build and gain momentum; don't be swayed by apparitions; stay focused one day at a time.

7 Survival Tips - How to Beat the Monday Morning Blues
By Clare Josa
"Tell me why I don't like Mondays..."

We all know the feeling: after a great weekend, the alarm goes off and realisation dawns: it's Monday morning. Again.

For many of us, it can trigger a sinking feeling of dread, as we take a deep breath and dive into another week.

It can go on for years, feeling stuck in a rut and unable to change anything.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

Here are 7 survival tips to help you beat the Monday Morning Blues.

Tip 1: Get specific
Rather than indulging in an open-ended rant about how awful Monday mornings are, it helps to get specific. What exactly is it you're not enjoying?
Don't be tempted to generalise - that leads to the proverbial mountain from a molehill. Being clear about specifically what is bugging you will reduce the problem to a more manageable size.

Tip 2: Time for wisdom
Remember the old saying:
"Grant me the patience to accept the things I cannot change...
... the courage to change the things I can...
... and the wisdom to know the difference."

Tip 3: It's up to you...
It's up to you how much you make out of the Monday Morning Blues. Basically, if you can change things, then get active and do something about them. If you can't, then you can always change how you choose to respond. Rather than getting wound up, stressed and frustrated, pick a different emotion - one that feels better. It'll lift your week and that's a promise.

Tip 4: Say No
Many of us end up with the Monday Morning Blues because we're feeling overworked and undervalued. What would it take to say "no" every now and then? Not aggressively, but firmly and with compassion. How much could that change things for you?

Tip 5: Tell a new story
Do you need to tell a different story? It can be tempting to indulge in Monday Morning Whinging, but it'll make you feel worse. Just don't go there. How about having a Monday Morning Rule: if you can't say something positive, say nothing?!!!

Tip 6: Don't ignore it
If Monday Morning Blues are a big issue for you, then there's a reason for it. Ignoring them just keeps you locked in the Groundhog Day cycle. Negative emotions can be an early warning sign that you need to make changes - either in your life or in your response to it. Is there a tiny change you could make today that would help next Monday morning?

Tip 7: Say thank you
No matter how bad our Monday Morning Blues might be, there are always good things going on in our lives. How about looking for the positives and focussing on the things you enjoy about your Monday? It's a sure-fire way to turn your Monday around and feel happier, fast.

If you'd like some more happiness quick fixes, there are great, easy techniques you can apply right now, to start feeling happier in less than 5 minutes.
