Tips on Business Goal Setting
By Victor Ghebre
Just like personal goals and career goals, business goals can help you stay motivated and focused on what you want you achieve in your business. They also provide a great measure of how much progress you have made and how far you are from achieving your dream result. However, it is important to set proper business targets to ensure that they serve their purpose. If your business goal setting is imperfect, you could risk the well being of your business in trying to achieve your goals.
Manageable Goals
Most people agree that it is best to have both long term and short term goals in your business goal strategy. The long term goal is useful in providing you motivation and inspiration, while short term goals provide you with focus on tasks at hand. It is important that you do not only have long term goals in mind. While "I want my business to make a profit of $1 million in a year" is a great goal to have, it is not a manageable goal in itself. Break it up into manageable chunks, say monthly or quarterly. You will find it easier to create a strategy to achieve $100,000 a month than $1 million in a year.
Result Oriented
It is crucial to ensure that the business goal you set is result oriented and not activity oriented. The intended result should decide what activities to pursue and not vice versa. Let us say that to earn $1 million for your business, you need 1000 clients. Getting thousand clients is a result oriented goal. It will lead to creation of various strategies for attracting these 1000 clients. On the other hand, if you decided that your goal is to send out a million direct mailers, there is no guarantee that you will get 1000 clients from this endeavor.
Action Oriented
An important aspect of business goal setting is having an action plan. Without an action plan, the goal is just a set of beautiful and well meaning words, which do not translate into any value for your business. Let's re-examine the statement- "I want my business to make a profit of $1 million in a year." This is not an action oriented statement. It is more like a desire or a pipe dream, but not a business goal. On the other hand, if you said, "I will create 1000 clients to earn $1 million," it is a goal that lends itself to an action plan.
Achievable Goals
This is perhaps the most important aspect of business goal setting. Your goals have to be achievable for them to be effective tools in your hands. If you are in a business where it is possible to get 1000 clients in a year, your goal is certainly achievable. On the other hand, if you are in a niche business like art collection, where the standard in the industry is about 10 clients per month, your goal of 1000 clients in a year is highly unrealistic and you are very likely to fail.

Practical Goal Setting Tips
By Victor Ghebre
One of the most difficult behaviors you will probably all face at some point in your lifetime is planning, carrying out and sticking to a goal. Too often other distractions enter your life and push you off the path. This leads to frustration and a sense of failure. By following a few goal setting tips you will find yourself easily accomplishing your goals.
Make a List
Begin by making a physical list of your goal or goals. Do not go overboard, as too many goals can seem quite overwhelming. When you write down your goal be as specific as possible. Your goal must have a time limit and there must be some way to measure your interim achievements as you move towards your goal. With each goal you write down include the reason why you wish to achieve this goal and how it will benefit you.
Devise a Plan
Now that you know exactly what your goal is, your next step is to determine what you need to get there. For example, maybe you want to become a unit manager at work. Are there any outside educational courses on management that you should enroll in? Or are their continuing education courses in your chosen field that might benefit your advancement? Maybe you would benefit from taking different positions at work so you can learn the whole process of your office. Include in this plan a time line for the different achievements that you need to meet to achieve your goal.
Prevent Failure
One of the most important goal setting tips is to actively prevent failure. Take note of all stumbling blocks that could slow you down or push you off track. Develop plans to face and circumvent these obstacles. And if you do get pushed off your path, have a plan in place to get you back on track. The smart warrior goes into battle knowing his enemy well. Be smart about failure and prepare to face and fight it successfully.
Acknowledge Sacrifices
Be realistic and face the fact that you might have to give up some facets of your life. Maybe you will have to spend more money, or work more overtime or spend occasional weekends away from your family. Whatever the sacrifices you must willingly agree to make them until your goal is achieved.
Assemble a Team
Do not hide your goals. It is very important to let those around you know what your goals are. This is especially true if those around you might be inconvenienced as you work toward your goals. If you have to work more to achieve your goal your friends and family should be aware of this goal so they can cheer you on instead of resent your time away. Try to find a mentor that has already achieved your goal and ask him or her to help you and keep you on track. The more people you have supporting you the easier you will find it to achieve your goals.
Reward Yourself
Finally, one of the best goal setting tips is to remember to celebrate. As you reach important steps toward you goal take time to reward yourself and those around you who have been supportive. Have a party for everyone, take a trip with family, buy a piece of jewelry or a new outfit and take everyone to dinner. Whatever you choose, just be sure to have a great time!

The Importance of Career Goal Setting
By Victor Ghebre
A career goal is a great tool in your hand to manage your career effectively. A career goal is like a compass on a dark and endless ocean and it guides your progress in the proper direction. Without a compass, you would be lost in the high seas. Similarly, without a proper career goal, you would be lost in the world of jobs and will find yourself unable to reach your full potential.
Benefits of Career Goal Setting
Setting a career goal for yourself may be one of the most effective tools you have to motivate yourself and to make significant progress in your career. Career goals help you stay focused on your chosen career path and work as great indicators to measure the progress you have made. Career goals also give you directions that you need to follow to reach your full potential. Having your final long term goal in mind will inspire you to face challenges and obstacles with grit and determination. Additionally, career goal setting gives you a sense of control over where your life is headed and helps reduce the stress and anxiety of not knowing where to do next.
Career Goal Setting
It is important to set proper career goals to ensure that they realistic and achievable. If you set goals for yourself that are more like fantasies and have a very slim chance of being realized, you are likely to feel frustrated and discontent. Keep your personal strengths and limitations in mind before you set your career goals. Prioritizing your goals is also a very important aspect of career goal setting. Classify your goals as very important, important and good to have accomplished. Once these are in place, you can then create a plan of action to achieve these goals.
Long Term & Short Term
It is important to create both short term and long term career goals. While the long term goal will give you the overall context within which to operate, short term goals will help you create milestones that will pave your way to your long term goals. Your long term goal should be akin to your life's ambition, while your short term goals should include progress that you intend to make in the next few months or years. Some people even create daily and weekly career goals to help them stay focused on the task at hand.
Flexibility is Key
The process of career goal setting should include a measure of time and results. You need to set a fixed result that you need to achieve in a fixed amount of time. This is how you will be able to measure your progress. However, it is important to remember that the plan you have created is meant to assist you in reaching your goal. Sticking to the plan should not become your goal in itself. It is important to have the ability to be flexible in your goals to account for life events that are not in anybody's control.

How to Effectively Use Goal Setting Tools
By Victor Ghebre
While goal setting tools can be helpful, you have to first know how to create the right goals to make a difference in your life. The most effective of these goals happen to be the so-called SMART goals, and you can find tools specifically designed to help you write, manage, and track these goals more easily.
What are SMART Goals?
Before you start using your goal setting tools, you want to know what SMART goals are and why they are different from ordinary goals. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. These are all key components of the goals you should be setting.
Let's say you have a goal to buy a home someday. That's not a SMART goal. Instead, you would write a goal, such as "I want to buy a home in the suburbs by the time I am 25" or "I want a vacation home in Turks and Caicos by 2015." These goals say specifically what type of house you want to buy. They also have a deadline. Now whether or not they are obtainable depends on your current situation. If you're jobless and living with your parents in 2013, the vacation home is probably not attainable, for example.
Why SMART Goals Matter
While these goals don't have to only apply to your career, that's where most of the research on their effectiveness has been done. One study of business graduates ten years after they earned their diploma looked at the students' current earnings and their goal setting habits. Not surprisingly, most students didn't have any goals. Those who did have goals but not SMART goals (only 14% of the total) earned three times more, on average, than the rest of the students.
Only 3% of students followed the acronym when setting their goals, but they were earning ten times more than the rest of the pack. Clearly, setting realistic and well thought out goals can have a big impact on your success.
Getting Started
First, you might want to check out the goal setting tools available on the Internet which can help you start putting these SMART goals together. It might help you to brainstorm a list of all the things you would like to achieve in your life. Make a list and convert the realistic ones into very specific, deadline-oriented goals.
The Importance of Attitude
One of the reasons SMART goals are effective is that writing them requires you to have a positive attitude about what you can accomplish in life. You can't put a deadline on something that you don't think is ever going to happen. But you have to temper that positive attitude with realistic expectations. Don't set yourself up for failure with pie-in-the-sky dreams. For example, if you don't have a lot of basketball talent, don't make a goal to become a basketball star for the Chicago Bulls by the time you're 23.
Keep your goals realistic and keep your efforts focused on obtaining them if you want to be successful.
