Why Stress is Lowering Your Life Expectancy

Recently, I had the opportunity to hear a bit of Dr. John Gray, author of the best-selling book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, talking about his book, Why Mars & Venus Collide.

Of course, some feminists aren't going to like hearing this, but Dr. Gray is confident that women are different from men, that we are wired differently. As he said, "Women's brains are made up of thousands more neural receptors than male brains. The result of this is a higher level of communication between the right and left hemispheres of the brain...which results in women having what is called an expansive thinking pattern." In laymen's terms this means that women are designed for multi-tasking. Another way of looking at it is that we women 'sweat the small stuff.' And today, there is an enormous amount of small stuff.

Men, on the other hand, having thousands less neural receptors, have a wonderful ability to concentrate on one thing at a time. Of course I'm generalizing, but suffice it to say that men 'sweat the big stuff.'

I am married to a wonderful man. Anything I would ask of him he would do for me; however, as good as he is, it is still my job to tell him what needs to be done. I could say to him, "Don't forget to stop at Wawa to get the milk, take the videos back to Blockbuster, and get some gas." He would most obligingly do all three things for me. But I'm the one that knew the three things needed to be done, not him.

Because the majority of women are working outside the home, they are in a situation in which they not only sweat the small stuff but they also have to sweat the big stuff as well. Unfortunately, that level of stress is shortening the life span of women today. Up until the last decade, women were living 6-7 years longer than men. Today, those numbers are changing and not for the better.

[Some years ago I had read that we were anticipating an increase in the building of retirement centers and nursing homes for the upcoming baby boomer generation; however, even then I questioned if we would need all of them because I believed stress was going to kill us before we could get there.]

Ladies, if we don't sweat the small stuff, then the small stuff doesn't get done. And that then affects the big stuff. The problem for the majority of women with whom I've worked is that they are carrying that stress in the shoulder and neck areas. Some women notice it in their jaws as well. (I have yet to work with a man who complained of sore neck and shoulders regions!)

Oddly enough, when you improve the sound of your speaking voice, you must learn to breathe with support. Once you start breathing with this support, you will discover that the tension, the soreness, the pain in your neck and shoulders will go away. And your jaw will miraculously unclench!

Who would have thought that a simple supported breath could do all that! I am certainly an advocate of yoga and all its many benefits but instead of taking 30 minutes to practice breathing why not breathe with support throughout your entire day? Make it a habit and you will be amazed at the change in your life.

One stress reduction tip I want to share is to do a tree hugging meditation.

With spring around the corner - you will want these tools in your belt to have when you bust out of the stale house to enjoy spring's wonderful fresh air.

Now, I have hugged trees for the last few years. If this raises one eye brow for you, being that I am a big football guy, GOOD. I've always prided myself on never fitting any mold and breaking any current one that I've created - almost as soon as its formed.

My friend Dr. Wu, who is a Chinese Medical Qi Gong Master, added an eastern piece to my practice that is taken it over the top. My meditation now tops anything else I do for clearing my mind and more. In this day and age... that is huge.

This meditation will melt stress from your mind. It will dial you into source power for unbelievable reserves of strength and energy. You've gotta give it a shot.

Yes, it sounds a little out there. However, I believe those who have a strong connection to source power will have the edge in the future.

Easy Ways to Reduce Stress

There's no shortage of stress in our everyday lives. However, there's many ways to reduce or minimize the effects of stress. Here are just a few of the many ways that can help you to reduce stress:

Meditation

One of the most effective ways to reduce stress is to incorporate meditation into your daily routine. Take just a few minutes a day to clear the thoughts from your mind, center yourself and concentrate on your breathing. Meditation can do wonders to ease the effects of stress on your body and mind. You may also consider practicing mindful meditation, which can be done just about anywhere. Mindful meditation reduces stress by clearing all thoughts from your mind except for a single task or activity. Whether it is driving, looking at the view from your office or eating your lunch, by simply concentrating fully on the task or activity at hand, you release all the other stressful thoughts from your mind.

Relaxation

It sounds easy, and it is. Practice relaxation by visualizing a soothing place and go to that place in your mind. Feel the breeze, feel the sand under your feet, breathe deeply and slow down your mind. Affirmations may also be helpful in relaxation. Repeat words and phrases that make you feel more relaxed.

Yoga

Often thought of as an exercise routine, yoga can also enhance relaxation and reduce overall stress. Buy a video or a book or attend a yoga class to learn some postures that will greatly enhance your health and ease the stress on your body.

Massage

This is a no brainer. Who doesn't feel better after having a massage? You can hire someone to give you a massage, have a loved one give you a massage or you can even give yourself a massage. Focus on reflexology points around the body to further enhance the effects.

Music

Many people get great stress reduction from listening to music. Whether it is their favorite CD or something that is specifically relaxing like classical music or ambient music, music can make you feel relaxed, joyful, excited, happy and everything in between.

Gardening

The activity of gardening can help you to meditate mindfully, center yourself and get back to what's important. The act of gardening, especially putting your hands in the dirt and growing something out of it, is especially beneficial. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is healthy in itself, as you'll be more apt to eat healthier.

Video Games

It may seem surprising, but there are many video games that can be relaxing. You can play a 3D shoot-em-up to get some frustrations out, play a relaxing flying simulation, puzzle games, hidden object games, card games or non linear games like Animal Crossing, The Sims or Wii Fit. There are many video games that can help to reduce your stress and let you have more fun too.
