Teamwork in the Workplace

A tight knit team is a group of competent individuals who care deeply about each other. They are fiercely committed to their mission, and are highly motivated to combing their energy and expertise to achieve a common objective.

From our observation and studies on teamwork in the workplace, we have found three primary conditions that have to be met in order to attain higher levels of team performance and member satisfaction.

1. Resources and Commitment
2. Ownership and Heart
3. Learning

These three conditions are the heart and soul of teamwork. These conditions are not a blueprint. Each group is unique, and the specifics and details of teamwork have to be worked out separately. Let s look closer at number one - Resources and Commitment.

RESOURCES AND COMMITMENT

A strong personal commitment and leap of faith are needed to start up and sustain tight knit teams. Genuine energy and resources are required during the early stages. For example, important non-task time is needed for teams to meet and establish identity, expectations, spirit, bonds, and patience is required for learning, coaching and behavior change that is consistent with team principles. Investment in teamwork is very intangible. You can t measure it like most corporate assets that can be sold off for a profit if you have a couple of bad quarters.

Teamwork in the workplace requires a lot of care, sensitivity, and patience for it to pay off in the long run. This is not exactly the formula that most organizations run on these days. Typically we see organizations pre occupied with putting out fires and handling crises. Most organizations have a very short-term focus and many leaders are not enlightened enough to invest in fire prevention and not get caught by the excitement of the task or by the activity trap that is so common today. It doesn t take much to bring a group of individuals together to do a job especially if you are depending on just a compensation package to get them to produce.

On the other hand, teamwork in the workplace does take a deep personal commitment and belief in team synergy and collaboration. Some managers harbor the belief that work only gets done when there is a singular powerful, expert, authoritative figure running the work group. When you look closely at it, you are likely to find that a disturbingly large number of organizations are built around rugged individualism and that people want to build their own empires and work independently. So many of us have been taught in life to commit to win-lose competition for academic grades and sports scores. We learn to go for the jugular very early on in life, and we put our faith and commitment into this mode of thinking. Competition can be fun and rewarding if we can get this powerful drive aimed and the right target.

The problem we see in a lot of situations is that teamwork in the workplace is being killed by friendly fire. In other words, we are directing our competitive energies at looking better than another person or looking better than another team in the organization. All too often we compete for personal rewards at the expense of others. We act as though our department is in a race with other departments, and we take our eye off the real competition.
The fact of the matter is that we have found few organizations that are committed enough to base some of the reward system on teamwork and make it a priority. It seems that in earlier generations it wasn t a big problem and teamwork was naturally rewarding.

People on the farms and ranches had to cooperate to survive. Successful crops and survival of the livestock depended on joining the efforts of many. Barns and homes were constructed as a result of teamwork, only we called it being neighborly. Amazing things could be accomplished today if we could get members and leaders to trust and commit to the teamwork process of joint problem solving, consensus decision making and shared leadership and win/win conflict resolution.***

CHAMPAGNE CORKS - Celebrate Your Promotion!

The champagne corks have been popping to celebrate your promotion. You have a well paid job you love its really interesting. You are using your talents to the full and your boss really values your contribution! If you recognise yourself in the statement above congratulations! If you want it to be true how can you make it happen?

Many people are stuck in dead end jobs, resentful that they are passed over for promotion. They know they are capable of more but something is holding them back. You want to succeed What should you do? The first thing to understand is that if you do nothing differently then nothing will change. In order for anything to be possible you have to take action.

Secondly you have to start by looking at yourself rather than blaming your position on others. Be honest with yourself. Close your eyes, see yourself at work as others see you. Over the next few days at work listen to yourself and consider how you act. Do you behave like promotion material? Sit down quietly and write your own reference based on how you actually perform now.

Include a comment on your work habits, time keeping, reliability, ability to get the job done, attention to detail, accuracy, how you manage under pressure. Think about your ability to work as part of a team, how you get on with colleagues and customers or clients, your communication skills.

Are you a problem finder or a solution provider? Do you moan about things or deal with them in a constructive and helpful way. Do you do just enough to get by or take a pride in a job well done? Are you enthusiastic, loyal and committed?

What skills have you to offer?

The third step is to think about the job you would like to do. What sort of person does it need? Think about the personal skills and characteristics you would look for if you were on the appointment panel. Make a list under the following headings: Personal Characteristics, skills, knowledge and experience. Compare your reference with the job specification you have created. Think carefully, would you honestly recommend yourself without reservation for promotion? Are there any areas you need to improve or develop? Have you got enough experience? Where are the gaps? What do you need to do to ensure you have what it takes?

Fourthly, identify your goals and when you want to achieve them by. Make your goals realistic but challenging. Work out a daily programme to achieve your goals. Talk about them to others, make them real and make them happen. Remember to celebrate your achievements. If things go wrong remember that it happens to successful people too. They don t give up but use each failure as an opportunity to learn and develop.

Make sure you model promotion worthy behaviours. It may help you if you think about those people you know who are good role models, or about what makes the ideal boss? Think about what makes them good. Make a list of their attributes In house promotion or a job elsewhere either way you will need a reference so the opinion of those you currently work for will count.

The fifth step is to make an appointment to see your boss. Make it at a time convenient to them, when they can concentrate on your agenda. Prepare what you want to say. I am really keen to develop my career. What do you think I need to do to be ready for promotion? Listen to the feedback with an open mind. Ask for support and training in the areas where development is needed. Show them your action plan and involve them in the process.

Be honest in your dealings with yourself and others. Know your strengths and face your weaknesses. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you. Take charge of your own destiny and the possibilities are endless.***

Do You Need Help Writing A Winning Cover Letter?

Your cover letter is critical to your success. It sets the tone. It is read before your resume and includes vital information about you that every potential employer needs. If you don t have a cover letter, or if you have one that is poorly written, you re setting yourself up for failure.

Knowing the crucial elements of a cover letter is imperative to getting in doors and moving your candidacy forward. Your cover letter must function as a roadmap leading the reader from start to finish. It must be created with one thought in mind to get you noticed. It must invite, it must compel, it must drive the reader to a very specific conclusion: This candidate is qualified; in fact, not only qualified, but the best fit for the position.

Your resume will then be read. If your resume is as powerful as your cover letter, an interview will be scheduled. So how should a winning cover letter be constructed? There are a number of ways to actually begin the letter. You could pose a question, you could make an extraordinary statement to grab the reader s attention, or you can quote someone famous. Whatever you do, make sure it is appropriate to the advertised position and to the skills you possess. Along with this opening, you want to note the specific job to which you are responding.

Your letter then needs to state your worth, your applicable accomplishments and their relationship to the responsibilities of the position. This can be a couple of paragraphs, but keep in mind that less is more as long as significant content has been included. It s critical that your cover letter be at most one page. The final paragraph is your call to action. It is where you state your follow-up plan. This is where you create continuity to ensure your success.

Make sure you do not include any salary information in your cover letter. It will either disqualify you or lock you in to compensation that does not match your worth. If the job ad requests your salary information, you can always state that it is negotiable. While not being specific, doing this will keep you in the running. Regardless of your field of endeavor or level of experience, you can write an attention-grabbing cover letter which, in conjunction with a powerful resume, will grant you access to the right opportunities and lead you to a successful job search conclusion. Working As A Wedding Photographer

One of the most rewarding aspects of a photographer s career can be capturing moments and memories from the weddings of loving and happy couples. In fact, making sure that each and every shot, whether candid or posed, is just right can be both amazingly difficult and uniquely rewarding at the same time. As a wedding photographer you carry an awesome responsibility.

The events that you are recording on film will occur for these two particular people only once and the way that they remember their wedding will be directly affected by the job that you do. Because of this, the wedding photographer s task, while not as glamorous as that of a fashion, sports or news photographer, may be the most important in the craft of photography itself. Photographs like those of the flag raising at Iwo Jima, the unnamed sailor kissing his unnamed girlfriend after the end of World War II, and the New York firemen raising the US flag on 9/11 may have dramatic impact on the entire world, but the wedding photographer has the ability to impact the lives of individuals in a unique and profound way. Wedding photographers must learn to be able to catch the smallest details of the wedding occasion in a way that will create lasting memories.

The focus, of course, is always the bride and groom, but the wedding photographer is also charged with recording those moments that the busy couple may not even have been aware of. While the couple is sure to cherish the photographs of themselves at the altar, reciting their vows or stuffing that traditional first piece of wedding cake into each other s mouths, it is the photos of a happily drunken Uncle Jack trying to do The Chicken Dance or of a small child s reaction to the sheer enormity of the event that will be looked upon and remembered fondly by the couple and their family for years to come.

The key to being a successful wedding photographer lies in two concepts: ability and invisibility. The skilled wedding photographer will use her ability to set up poses that result in beautiful and memorable images, to use correct lighting and filter effects on the final product that create breathtaking images, and to make everyone she photographs look better than they do in life. She will use invisibility to be able to catch all those candid moments and get incredible shots of the ceremony in process while remaining unobtrusive and almost completely unnoticed by the wedding party and guests.

Mastery of these skills takes time, training, and a certain amount of instinct, but the best wedding photographers have it down to an art.

If photography is your field of choice, you could certainly do worse than opting to work as a wedding photographer. You ll get to see people at their happiest moments; looking as beautiful and radiant as they can, the memories you help to create and maintain will last for their entire lifetimes, and they will always remember the incredible work of the photographer at their wedding.***

Learn some useful feng shui career tips

As it does with every main life aspect, feng shui also provides tips and guidelines to help you improving your career. If your career is not moving on in the way you wish, that is due to a lack of balance and harmony within your environment and the elements that affect it.

Feng shui career tips intend to help you reach that harmony, but besides of following these specific tips, you should try to follow feng shui guidelines for all your life areas, since your life should be balanced as a whole as well. One first and very important feng shui career tip talks about your desk position. The desk or table you use for working should be placed in a position that allows you to see the main door. Your desk should never be with your back at the door, since that would be very harmful for your career. And if possible, you should also try to place it in such an angle where you can also see the window.

You should be careful of not having your back towards a sharp edge or a poison arrow. If you can't avoid this, you could minimize the harmful effects by placing a plant or a crystal covering it. In case you have a door or a window at your back, you can also place a plant or a crystal to neutralize bad consequences. It is also important that you design your office or working space according to the bagua map indications. If possible, you should try to create your working space at the south of the environment where it will be.

According to the bagua, south symbolizes the life area corresponding to career, and therefore it is the ideal place for such purpose.

Another important thing to take into account is tidiness. Your working space, and especially your desk, should be tidy. You should get rid of clutter from your working space and maintain it as clean and tidy as possible. Besides, it is particularly important that you keep the south area of your desk free of objects since this area is the one which corresponds to career according to the bagua map.***

Kembalikan Gairah Kerja Dengan 10 Langkah

Kembalikan Gairah Kerja Dengan 10 Langkah

CV Writing - How to Write a CV

To illustrate your strengths and maximise your chances of getting through to interview and to put factual information, such as dates, places, names together in a presentable and readable form. Focal Point It is claimed that the human eyes are naturally drawn to a focal point one third down from the top of the page. Therefore, put your most useful information in this area. It might be your Profile, Key Skills, Professional Qualifications or details of your most recent employment.

You can choose whichever you think is most important and relevant to your application. Always get a second opinion when you have put your CV together. It is difficult to be objective about oneself.

Presentation It is often thought that a good CV should be fitted on to one side of A4 and a professional CV over two. This can be difficult if you are a mature applicant with a long employment history. If you need to go on to a second page make sure that the CV is spread out over 2 whole pages, not one and a half pages as this looks messy. As a 'rule of thumb' there should be more white than black on a page to make it easier to read.

Always write a rough draft first. It can be as long as you like as you will edit it later. Always start with your Career History as this will highlight your Key Skills and help you write your Profile.

Once you have compiled your draft copy you must edit it

1. Take out anything that will not help you get where you want to be

2. Write in the 'third' person as much as possible keeping 'I' to a minimum

3. Never use the past tense e.g. use "supporting senior management" rather than "supported senior management"

4. Use short sharp sentences cutting out any waffle and jargon

Headings Name Print your name in bold type at the centre top of your CV. If there is any doubt as to which is your surname, e.g. James Martin, indicate by using capitals or underlining. Address Top left of CV. Full address including post code. Telephone Top Right of CV. Full dialing code and daytime and evening numbers if possible. Date of birth Put in full such as 13th December 1962. Do not put your age.

Bearing in mind that you will be close to the Focal Point now, this might need to go at the end of the CV under 'Personal' along with other details such as marital status and children. Marital status You do not have to include this at all. If you choose to, make sure you use only "married" or "single". Do not use divorced or co-habiting. Put at the end of the CV under 'Personal'. Children Its up to you whether you include this information or not but if you include it put it at the end of the CV under

'Personal' Profile This is an introductory statement about who you are and what you have to offer. You should complete this last although it is positioned prominently in the CV, possibly in the Focal Point. It should be no more than two sentences and include the most important facts about yourself. You can include skills, achievements, responsibility or personal qualities. e.g. Highly motivated Account Manager with successful direct and telesales experience in hardware and software industries.

Key Skills Several Key skills should be highlighted after you have analysed and edited your employment history. Pick out no more than six. Make sure they are relevant. Do not include dates. A key skill can come from an earlier job or an outside interest. If you are short on direct experience and qualifications you may have skills arising from your personality, i.e. Interpersonal skills, e.g. "the ability to relate and communicate with others". Some examples of descriptive words to use in key skills are: Administering Implementing Budgeting Leading Reorganising Forecasting Advising

Employment History Always start with your most recent employment. Break down your job functions as much as possible. The job description on your contract might provide a starting point or, consider how your employer might advertise your job. You should have more to say about your most recent, and therefore most relevant, employment. Include successes and achievements especially if it saved the company money.

Don't have any employment gaps. If these occur explain them briefly. Qualifications If you are a mature applicant you can leave these out as career history is more important. Put the highest qualification first with year achieved. If you have a degree you can leave out the lower qualifications altogether or include the basic information. Do not include poor grades or failures. Professional qualifications Only include those that are still current. Training Only include training that is relevant to the position for which you are applying.

Interests Only include interests that are unusual or which indicate transferable skills, achievements or responsibilities. Reasons For Applying This finishes the CV off with a concluding statement and puts the application into context. Don't imply you are out to gain advantage to yourself such as "I would like to join the company to gain additional experience". Instead, concentrate on what you have to offer, "my experience at......would be useful to the company because............."

Finally Your CV should be available soft copy or on good quality plain white A4 paper. Do not use double sides. Only fold once and enclose an SAE***

4 cara Atasi Rasa Bosan Kerja

4 cara Atasi Rasa Bosan Kerja

Research Department Tips

The SearchLogix Group's Research Department utilizes job boards. Job boards, such as Monster, can be very useful. The "perfect" candidate is never found on a job board; however, we almost always find someone who could potentially "lead" us to a candidate who might be.

The SearchLogix Group uses job boards as another tool for building relationships to connect to new people. Our Internet Research Team spends hours digging through thousands of candidates who have chosen to post their resumes on job boards. Here are a few things our team looks for initially before a call is placed to qualify candidates found on a job board:

- Date resume posted or updated o Spelling errors o Qualifications o Dates, salary information, relocation, commute distance

It is important for candidates who want to be found to stay in control of their resume while it's on the internet. It is also important that they take it off if they are no longer open to new opportunities. Candidates should be honest when speaking with recruiters. Let them know upfront if, when and who they are interviewing with. A good recruiter will ask! If you are already interviewing with the company that the recruiter called about, that's fine. They won't submit you again to the same company but they will keep you in mind for other opportunities. Recruiters are all about building relationships. If candidates are not honest with the recruiter, you can bet they won't be called again.

Finding candidates on the internet is a great supplement to cold calling and networking. Hiring authorities pay good money to have recruiters find the best candidate to fill open positions. They should expect the recruiter to do everything possible to find these candidates.

Asking a recruiter to avoid using the internet is not in a company's best interest. Internet researchers are trained and are specialists in digging through the internet in ways that others are not. These candidates in some cases go through "more" of a screening process than the others but this is to protect all involved.

A final thought...
the best candidate for a position may be an internet candidate. Can you tell the difference between candidates sourced thru networking or sitting in a database or listed on the internet? Filling the position with the best and most qualified candidate is what matters most!***

Kecewa Kerja Kantor, Pilih buat Seprai

Kecewa Kerja Kantor, Pilih buat Seprai
Titiek Suryanti

Don't Trade Your Dreams For Peanuts

Recently, I had the chance to see part of the movie Collateral. In it, actor Jaimie Foxx plays a cab driver named Max who happens to pick up the wrong customer one night. That customer is Vincent, a hit man played by Tom Cruise. I found one bit of dialogue from the movie very interesting. In one particular scene, Max is describing his future plans to start his own Limo business. He boasts that driving a cab is just a temporary transition until the timing is right to begin this dream of his. As the conversation continues, Max reveals that he s been a cab driver for 12 years!

This is typical of so many people who talk about their dreams but are afraid to ever follow through with them. Following their dream is just too risky for some, so excuses are made for putting them off. Now s not the right time, they rationalize I need to have all my ducks in a row.

The problem is, that time never comes. Before they realize it, they've traded in those aspirations for the security and comfort of a steady paycheck. They exchange their dreams for a handful of peanuts . In Africa, they catch monkeys by placing a few peanuts inside a hollow coconut which is attached to a long rope. One end of the coconut has a small hole cut out that is just large enough for a monkey s hand. As the monkey smells the peanuts, he comes up to the coconut and reaches inside to grab a fistful. Once he has a fistful of peanuts, his hand becomes too large to pull back out of the hole. What s even more interesting is that he will not let go of those peanuts despite being hauled in for capture.

We might laugh at this monkey, but how many people are out there working in a job they hate simply because they can t let go of the security. Like Max, they have dreams, but they never get around to acting on them because they fear giving up those peanuts. So what goals and aspirations have you been putting on hold? Most clients I meet with know deep down what they would love to be doing. The problem is they re not doing anything about it. My advice is to not let another day slip by without sitting down and making a plan for what you would love to be doing the rest of your life. If you need help and direction making those plans, ta ke action today !

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sales. Explore. Dream. Discover. Mark Twain ***

Job Search Alert for Women

OK. The stats for 2005 are in.

1. Women make up about half the American work force.
2. Women hold about half the managerial positions.
3. Women earn just 73 percent of what men earn in the same jobs.
4. Women hold only 5 percent of the country's top-paying jobs.
5. Just eight of the Fortune 500 companies have women CEO's.

The secret to changing this situation is learning to communicate more effectively.
Molly Dickinson Shepard just wrote a book called "Stop Whining and Start Winning." She contends that women, who are said to come from Venus, need to learn the language of their Mars-based male counterparts. "They must get in the game," she advises. "Otherwise they won't rise any further--and the statistics won't change. If women communicate more effectively, they will be heard.

"If a woman is not heard, she's going to be seen as passive and be marginalized," Shepard explains. It's critical that women fell recognized and valued."

Men get more than their share of money and power in the American workplace. But it doesn't have to be that way especially if you've made the decision to change careers or search for a new job. Learning to speak assertively to your next employer can position you for career growth that can challenge the glass ceiling. Fortunately there are tons of FREE job search strategies and techniques that can put you way ahead of the competition and level the playing field with male counterparts.

Shepard points out that men really believe it when they say, "It's just business, it's not personal." They rip into each other during meetings and then go out for beers together. It's to women's advantage to be just as thick-skinned, Shepard concludes.

Be sure to check out communication techniques presented by EEI at their website. Their 20 years of experience as experts in alternative job search strategies can make the difference for any woman job candidate who wants to break through the glass ceiling.***

Petite Modeling is There a Career for You?

Petite modeling is a tough industry to break into. Especially since most modeling agencies won't represent models unless they're 5 feet and 9 inches tall or taller. Have you had people tell you're cute? Do you hear all the time "you should be a model"? But you just don't qualify for the strict standards that most modeling angencies have? Rest assured there is a career out there for the petite model. There is work in the worlds of the fashion, commercial, editorial and many other industries for the less 5 feet 9 inch models. There is even work for models as short as 5 feet tall.

Most of the work in the petite modeling industry involves close up pictures of the face, hands, feet or other body parts instead of the body as a whole. The fashion modeling industry is very body focused, that is why they have such stringent height requirements for their models. As a petite or avearage size model you would probably not be working much in the fashion industry so bodily imperfections and height are not usually factors. Evan a fairly average looking person can be very successful in this industry if they are willing to work hard, get the job done and show clients they are easy to work with.

So how do you get in to this specialized segment of the modeling market?

First, remember the focus in this market is very much on the face rather than the figure. To make it in this market you need to have nice skin, a good bone structure, good teeth, and be cute. Most of your success will also be based on the look that is "in" at the moment. To find out if you have any chance of success as a petite model you need to get an evaluation from an agency or someone who has contact with clients within the industry. This will tell you if you have the look that their clients are hiring at the moment.

If you are told you just don't have the right look at the moment don't despair. The modeling industry moves at a fast pace, and what's not in now could be the rave in the next 6 months. The models in this segment of the market are ofter paid very well because advertisers usually focus more on the look of the models face than her figure. Advertisers usually have more money to spend than many clients in the fashion industry and a good model could make as much as $125.00 per hour on her first job.

Not cute? Do you think you don't have that "glamourous" look that could get you high paying jobs as a model. Don't despair, even a normal person can get high paying jobs in this industry if they are easy to work with and sparkle on camera. A plain model who shines is more likely to get the job than a beautiful model who is lifeless. Photographers and clients would rather work with a model who is vibrant and easy to work with than a beautiful one who is honery, does not take instructions well, and acts "snobby" or concieted on the job. Putting too high a price on yourself in this highly competative industry many times will cause clients to pass you on for a more pleasant model.***

Graduate Job Applications - Identify Your Transferable Skills

Getting into the labour market after school or college is a daunting prospect and that's without the minefield of jargon, overnight advances in technology and discriminatory attitudes. OK - Let's bust a bit of that jargon! What exactly are transferable skills? Quite simply, they are things you can do in one area of your life which can be used somewhere else.

Let's take an example. As a student, did you get all your assignments in on time? Were you able to set up extensions if your work was late? Did you learn how to type quickly and use a number of computer programmes effectively? Did you hold down a part-time job and manage to juggle work with study and your social life? If you answered yes to all, or at least some of the above, you have demonstrated an extensive range of skills, such as effective time management, negotiating and good communication skills. Now, you may not give them such grand titles, but if you were filling in a job application form, that's exactly what you'd call them.

You've been picking up skills from the moment you were born. The problem is that you take most of your skills for granted. That's something we've got to change! So grab a pen and paper, get yourself a cup of coffee and let's get started.

Choose any role you've had in your life.
As a graduate, you'll have spent a large part of your life so far as a student and so we'll use that in our example. Have a go at brainstorming the skills you developed in your school or student days.

What did you come up with? Communication Skills

You had no chance of surviving as a student - and even less chance of passing your exams - if you couldn't communicate the knowledge and skills that you are at college to learn. How did you communicate this information? By writing essays, giving presentations or talks, delivering a lesson to other students, answering questions, writing a thesis?

You may have devised questionnaires and interviewed members of the public, written articles for on or offline publication or for a college newsletter. You'll have taken notes and summarised information from books and lectures. Think about each subject you studied and write a list of the methods of communication you used, both oral and written and write examples of each.

Teamwork
As a student you will have been exposed to group work of some sort - I know, I'm a teacher! You may have had to research a subject to make a group presentation or for a written assignment, or perhaps you produced a class newsletter or were involved in a community project with classmates. If you have played any team sports in your spare time, you will know a lot about what it takes to work as a member of a team.

Ability to work alone and on your own initiative
Much of the work you did at college was not group work, but stuff you had to do alone and you probably had to motivate yourself to get on with it. So, how good were you at getting all the work done? You may not have liked it, but if it had to be done, chances are you did it.

How did you use your own initiative? Did you devise ways in which to make remembering information easier? Did you come up with creative ideas to make your work different and interesting? Did you find a job which you were able to fit in with your studies and which solved some of your financial problems?

Ability to meet deadlines
Deadlines - You certainly had a few of these in your student days. Did you meet them? You may have learned the hard way, sitting up all night at the last minute, but most people manage to get things in on time. And if you didn't, how well did you negotiate an alternative solution?

IT Skills
As a student you will have used, at the very least, the internet, email and word processing packages. Your college will probably have provided free tuition in these and possibly also in programmes like Powerpoint and Excel. You may also have developed other skills in your own time or when you were at school, such as web design or programming. Add all these to your list.

Research skills
You will have had to do some form of research for your assignments and for your thesis or dissertation if you went to university. Write down the methods you used - internet, specialist libraries, journals, interviewing, using questionnaires, doing case studies.

Communication skills, teamwork, ability to work on your own and to use your own initiative, ability to meet deadlines, IT and research skills are all high on employers' lists of essential attributes in a graduate employee. Your job is to provide examples which prove that you have these skills. So, using the information in this article, make your own list of specific examples. They will help you shine both on paper and at the interview.***

Resumes and First impressions

Hunting for a position in a new career field? Trying to take your new education or skills and transform them into a job with a future? I've spent the last few weeks working in a placement service trying to help people find that first "career" job; trying to help them make the transition from student to employee. I see the same mistakes over and over again. Here are a couple of things to be aware of as you search for that fresh start.

1. The Skim Rule
- Understand that most recruiters will only take less than 30 seconds to skim a resume for further review. Are your skills and abilities described in such a way that they leap off the page. Large companies now use recruiting software to determine which resumes will be processed for further review. If your resume is inconsistent, uses incorrect terminology for the position you're applying for, or is cluttered you might not make the cut.

2. Spell check, spell check, spell check
- Then review for proper grammar and usage. I can't tell you how many resumes are ignored each day because the grammar, spelling or word usage is improper. If you don't take the time to verify that the resume you're sending is correct, how careful will you be with your potential employer's information?

3. Acronyms and Jargon
- Unless the jargon or acronym is standard in the industry try to avoid it. If the recruiter does not understand what you are referring too, then they are unlikely to continue reviewing the resume. Take the time to define and describe your acronyms, jargon or software functions.

4. Contact Phone Number
- You've put your contact phone number on your resume. Is it actually a number you can be reached at? If you are using your cell phone will you be able to keep the service current and turned on? Will other people be answering the phone? Will they know how to take a message?

5. Voice Mail
- Your cell phone and answering machine messages provide the ability to include music, speech clips and even real audio in your greeting. I know the temptation to play your favorite song or audio clip for you callers is great; however I suggest you resist. You want to give a potential employer a good first impression when they attempt to reach you to set up the initial interview. Your voice mail message should include your name, a brief message requesting information and an assurance that you will return the call.

For example: "You have reached Carole Jones, I'm unable to answer the phone at this time, but if you will leave your name and number I will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you."

6. The Application
- Your resume can say anything you want to about yourself. A Resume is merely an ad to sell you to a potential employer. When you are asked to fill out an application you are creating a legal document. The application needs to be complete and honest. If the company uses any type of background check you can be disqualified from consideration because of inaccuracies on the application. It is never appropriate to refer to your resume on an application (i.e. SEE RESUME). Take the time to provide complete and accurate information.

7. References
- Do the people you have listed for your reference know they are being used as a reference? Have you requested permission to use them as references in the past? Do you keep in touch with you references? Nothing leaves a bad impression like the potential employer trying to check references only to have the contact person confused or worse yet, unprepared to speak on your behalf.

Always let your reference know if you have had a great interview and you think the potential employer will be checking references. While you're at it, make sure that the contact information you are providing is accurate and current. Nothing will disqualify you faster than the future employer's inability to verify your references or work history.***

Career Advice

Career Advice: SUCCESS REQUIRES MANAGEMENT OF CHANGE by Ramon Greenwood Change is certain and constant. Benjamin Franklin would have been wise to add "change" to his adage that "death and taxes are the only certainties of life." We are inundated every day with new relationships, new ways to do things, new expectations and new information. The total of all knowledge doubles every five years. It has been estimated that 75 percent of all current workers will need retraining by the year 2010; today's high school graduates will have to be prepared to change jobs or careers at least 10 times in their lifetimes.

The way each of us handles change bears a direct correlation with our career success.

We can resist change - deny its existence, keep on doing things in the same old ways because that's the way we've always done them. Then we will be buried with the other relics of the past, done in by what the author Alvin Toffler termed, "Future Shock." We can merely accept change and go along with the world it produces for us. If so, we will dance on cue to whatever tune the fiddler chooses to play.

BECOME AN AGENT OF CHANGE

Or we can recognize that change is inevitable and embrace it. We can become agents of change, so we have a hand in shaping the environment in which we live and in determining our own success. The alternative is obvious: be content to remain with the old and familiar, accepting the idea that the comfort of a known environment is worth being left behind as the world marches on.

In order to live with change, we have to realize that success is never finally achieved. Mountain climbers have a saying, "You never conquer a mountain. You stand on the summit a few moments, then the wind blows your footprints away." Peter Drucker, the chief management guru, declares, " ... success always means organizing for the abandonment of what has already been achieved. There is no more difficult challenge."

This means to try new and unfamiliar ideas, untested ground, unthinkable thoughts. That is uncomfortable, but always exciting territory. But it can be dangerous. However, like it or not, that is where the gold is to be found.

Machiavelli wrote in The Prince in the early 1500's: "There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things, because the innovator has for enemies all those who have done well under the old conditions, and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under the new." George Bernard Shaw wrote: "Progress is impossible without change; and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything."

Being an agent of change and a beneficiary requires flexibility and imagination, as well as courage.***

How Much Are Men Spending on Grooming Products? More Than You Think. More men are frequenting spas, undergoing cosmetic surgery and buying new lines of grooming products in drugstores. The three-day beard look is definitely out, as is drawing the line at a neat hairstyle and some aftershave. While that approach is both simple and inexpensive, the escalating importance of appearance in the current social and business climate has created the new "metrosexual" man.

As currently defined, "metrosexual" is not one, but a range of attitudes about male appearance, and looking sharp and clean-cut is the goal. Though some veer left, others right - when it comes to right down to it, everyone is on the same page. Good-looking skin, hair and nails are essential, both in business and in attracting the opposite sex. Investing in the Bottom Line Recognition is growing that paying attention to grooming products may simply be a wise investment, and that it's not easy to keep up with women who utilize every method under the sun to stay looking young and attractive as long as possible.

According to Drug Store News, "men have become more aware," and they're spending more than $1 billion annually on their appearance. Manufacturers of personal care products have also become more aware, offering Nivea for Men, Gillette Complete Skincare, and a new Clearasil line extension just for young men. Eye Cream for Men? Unthinkable No Longer The "average Joe" is even dabbling in tinted moisturizers, eye creams and hair treatments, such as XCD s Improver Tinted Moisturizer and Reviver Eye Cream, and Vogue International's Ego Trip and Not For Girls haircare. Accordingly, chains such as CVS and Rite Aid are making room to expand space devoted exclusively to men.

Even Toenails Get Scrutiny

An article in the August 13, 2004, Wall Street Journal quoted one male professional as saying "I prefer open-toe, but I would probably wear socks with them in public. Otherwise, you have to prepare your toes." This puts a whole new spin on the saying, Be prepared !

The widespread popularity of sandals has also created a greater demand for pedicures and foot grooming products. Just as men notice women's feet, women are giving men a head-to-toe scrutiny, and flip-flops or Birkenstocks won t hide any toenail or dry, cracked heel problems. Carol Buck, CEO of Xenna Corporation says young and middle-aged men are very becoming very self-conscious about discolored toenails women can polish them, but men have no way to hide the problem. "Some men are so embarrassed they not only won t wear sandals, but stay away from the beach or pool scene, she says. Xenna's addresses the problem of embarrassing nails and feet with its NonyX Nail Gel, an exfoliant of nail-yellowing keratin debris, and Callex Callus Ointment for flaking or cracked heels and foot calluses.

Metallica Metaphorphosis

While a few of the Hollywood types may still aim for a Marlboro Man image, it appears that metrosexual products are here to stay. After viewing himself in the documentary "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster," guitarist Kirk Hammett was quoted by Time Magazine as saying he wished he had "spent a little more time in the grooming department." With drugstores now full of male-oriented products, he s not alone, and solutions are right down the street. ***

Networking to find jobs with people you've lost touch with

Most people realize networking is an effective way to find jobs. But networking isn't a subject that's taught in school so not everyone knows how to do it. In this job searching tip, we're going to address the question of how to network with people you haven't talked to for a while.

I have been out of work for several years, and am now looking to get back into the workforce. I know they say that networking is the preferred way to find jobs, buy I haven't talked to my old network for over two years. I feel reluctant to call people I haven't talked with in several years, since it's obvious that I'm only calling to see about help finding a job, no matter how I couch it. I'm over 50 which I know doesn't help. I should add that when I first started looking (before having to stop), my contacts weren't helpful. Is it worth trying them anyway?

-D.S.

Dear D.S.,

It always makes sense to try networking with people you already know when looking for finding a job. Even if they weren't able to help you a couple years ago. People are constantly meeting new people, so people in your contacts' networks have changed since you last talked to them and some of them may be in a better position to help you. The average professional person has at least 200 contacts in their rolodex.

Even if you have only a fraction of that number in yours, let's say 50, you still have potentially 10,000 people who can help you find a job because 50 times 200 = 10,000. The key is to motivate people in your network to make them want to help you land a new position. You are right that when you first make contact with people you haven't talked to for a while, at least some of them will believe your only motivation is to get help finding a job. That is not necessarily a bad thing. People understand how important it is to have a job and most people in this world are good-natured and want to be helpful.

Even if you just reach out to people in your network and explicitly ask them for help finding a job, you will most likely get some positive responses. However, if you want to get people to really go to bat for you and to really think about who they might know that could help you, there has to be something in it for them -- whether it's a professional motivation or a personal one.

People who are really good at networking tend to be genuinely concerned about other people and constantly looking for ways to help people they know. When you call someone you haven't talked to for a while, find out what's going on with them personally and professionally. Find out what their interests are. Networking expert Harvey MacKay developed a list of 66 questions ranging from Spouse's name to favorite foods and sports teams.

When you're starting a relationship with someone -- or in your case, re-starting a relationship, one of your initial goals should be to learn about the person and their motivations and interests. It's not really important that you get them to help you find a job on the first phone call. If you're really looking to maximize the value of your network, you should look to create a relationship with the person and have a reason/excuse to talk to them again in the near future. Once you know some things about a person in your network, you'll naturally find reasons to get in touch with them. If you find out they're a Yankees fan, you might e-mail them after a spectacular Yankee game and ask them what they thought of it. Or if you find out they're into fitness, you might e-mail them an article you came across about exercise techniques.

These little communications -- especially if they're thoughtful and/or helpful -- will keep you on the person's radar screen and they'll be more likely to think about you and your situation when they're talking to other people they know. If you're looking for a way to make staying in touch with your contacts easier, we recommend checking out the RelationshipSecure software. RelationshipSecure provides a way to send out e-mails to people in your Outlook address book to verify their contact information. They get an opportunity to make any necessary corrections, and those changes automatically update your Outlook address book. Find out more by visiting www.RelationshipSecure.com.

It also might make sense for you to start working on expanding your network of contacts. Now that you've gotten a sense of the basics of networking effectively with other people, why not apply those techniques to working with recruiters? The great thing about recruiters is they are in the business of knowing people who can help you find a new position.

Posting your resume on several job boards is one effective way of getting in front of a lot of recruiters. We recommend the ResumeDirector.com service for this. Using ResumeDirector, you enter your resume once and then it's posted instantly on over 90 job sites like Monster, HotJobs, CareerBuilder, etc. Another approach to getting in touch with recruiters is to e-mail your resume to them. Use Job Search Hacks to Get Hired Faster

Baffled by the latest U.S. Labor stats about jobless claims? Two-sided confusion; cautious optimism and wolf-criers. No need to spin your wheels wondering. There s a no-hassle solution to the unemployment news blues. You ll have to run your search fundamentally different than your pals to find the next great career. Don t do it solo. Job searching alone is like hitchhiking a scary ride with an unknown stranger on a 180-mile long deserted, no-exit road with hopes you ll make your destination.

When you lack time or expertise to plan career moves carefully, sometimes the loss of ground is not apparent until years later. You can get trapped in a black hole and frustrated that your career is not advancing to full potential. Ever feel imprisoned in positions that lacked adequate reward, satisfaction, challenge or a future? There are many reasons for these job jails:
You ve become too specialized. You ve become too generalized. You failed to look ahead and plan for the future. You held out too long hoping for the right break. You accepted jobs that never made use of your best talents. You remain too long in positions that offered no challenge or mobility.

Use these seven job search marketing hacks and you ll get in front of decision makers faster. What s a hack? A hack is a clever solution to an interesting problem, so says the experts at O Reilly Media, Inc., a leading-edge book publisher that offers cool technology workarounds on everything from navigating Google and eBay to digital photography and gaming. Hacks are the down and dirty of getting a task done. Your mission here is to get a great job, high on adventure, low on headache.

Hack 1: Know the job market.

Locate and identify geographic employment hot spots. Search out emerging industries. Grow up and ditch the pabulum of pursuing comfortable industries that are on their way to obsolescence.

Hack 2: Know your functional and industry options and employers needs in these areas.

Pinpoint your top three positioning (career focus) alternatives to what you re now doing. Find the chief five employers that serve that market segment.

Hack 3: Know your most marketable skills, competency, and relevant background.

Create a personal branding; the things that make your package distinct. Blaze past your competition and neutralize the yawn factor in candidate- selection boredom by linking your portfolio of contribution to employer need.

Hack 4: Know how to win multiple, simultaneous interviews.

Spot the core three strategies to gain exposure that penetrates both the advertised and unadvertised job markets. Isolate which one is used the least but rewards the most, in terms of results.

Hack 5: Know how to create effective resumes and letters that sell solutions.

Build a campaign action plan that sends your tombstone resume to an early grave. Leverage your knowledge to solve employer problems through tailored special-ops marketing tactics that creates you stickiness in decision makers minds.

Hack 6: Know how to multiply your access to those who have the power to hire.

Networking is out. Building strategic relationships is in. Be there where. Informational meetings with those who have knowledge you need puts you in the driver s seat when hiring patterns emerge.

Hack 7: Know how to give your inner critic a name and tell it to be quiet.

Visualize the results you want, not the ones you fear. Trigger the right reactions in your targeted prospects by looking for ways you might be sabotaging yourself, then adapt, improvise, overcome.

A professionally-run job search gets you there faster. It gives you defined direction and leverage to compare, negotiate, and deal from strength. Try to imagine the alternative; hitchhiking to nowhere at the mercy of blind luck. Can you think of one rational reason why you d want to take this trip alone? ***

Forensic Science Careers - Real Life CSI

Advances in scientific technology in examining crimes scenes have turned forensic science into a high demand and rapidly growing career field. Adding to the popularity of forensic science jobs are TV shows like CSI Crime Scene Investigators.

This article will serve as an overview for a career in forensic science that includes many subcategories like forensic science consultants, fingerprint technicians, fingerprint examiners, forensic investigators and evidence technicians. Forensic Scientist Job Description. Forensic scientists investigate crimes by collecting crime scene evidence and using the natural sciences to analyze the data they recover.

They generally work 40 hours each week in a forensic science laboratory. Forensic science technicians are often required to go to the crime scene and collect the physical evidence that can be found. They work closely with government officials and police detectives in order to help solve crimes.

Additional tasks forensic scientists have include:

Reconstructing crime scenes
Collecting and analyzing DNA samples
Reporting investigative findings
Examining firearms and bullets
Analyzing textual evidence
Taking fingerprints
Interpreting laboratory findings
Keeping logs and records
Operating all laboratory equipment

Most forensic scientists specialize in certain types of evidence such as DNA analysis, firearm research and weapons testing, examining fiber, hair, tissue, or body fluid substances. They often work with chemicals, fluid samples and firearms that demand safety precautions. However, the risk of harm or contamination within these working conditions is minimal.

Salary Ranges / Job Outlook for a Forensic Scientist

Of all science technicians, forensic scientists currently earn the second highest annual salary. In 2002 the average pay rate for a forensic scientist was $19.73 per hour, or approximately $41,000. The low ten percent of this scale earned around $12.06 per hour - $25,100 yearly. The highest ten percent earned around $31.49 per hour - $65,500 yearly. However, the pay range depends upon factors like type of specialty, years of experience, type of employment and location. In the United States, the employment rate for forensic scientists is expected to grow steadily over the next decade. Current Nationwide trends estimate that job openings for forensic scientists will rise approximately 19 percent by 2012. These numbers indicate more than 360 job positions opening up each year. In 2002, forensic scientists held approximately 8,400 job positions.

These scientists work mainly for State and local governments, but keep close professional relationships with police investigators and other crime experts.

Employment rates are dependent upon field development, government spending abilities, local population growth and the locality s crime rate. Job growth for forensic scientists can be attributed to rapid scientific and technological advances. Researchers are developing and perfecting new experimental methods every day. This will cause forensic science departments to fill the technician positions this research will create. Currently, the number of skilled, experienced applicants is low.

These low numbers mean that forensic scientists working for State and government departments are highly likely to receive positive employment prospects and benefits.

Education / Getting Started

Although organizations seek applicants with bachelor s degrees, many employers will hire candidates who have completed specific training programs, obtained certification or possess an associate s degree. Training and certification programs generally take only two years to complete and will earn graduates the opportunity for a career in forensic science.

Programs with a focus in criminal investigations and criminal justice can help prospective applicants specialize as forensic consultants, fingerprint technicians, forensic investigators, laboratory technicians and fingerprint examiners. There are various courses that must be taken to qualify as a forensic science technician. Some important courses include chemistry, computers and electronics, law and government, public safety, mathematics, writing and communications.

Prospective scientists must have good decision making skills as well as written and oral expression. Additional skills include inductive reasoning, information ordering, critical thinking and the ability to identify patterns and details. Because forensic scientists work in crime scenes that may be stressful and emotionally draining, they must be able to control their emotions and handle situations that can be distressful.

Employers usually look for people with previous forensic experience. Many forensic science technicians begin in entry level trainee positions that help them gain job experience. Another good way to get experience is through internship programs that are offered by numerous schools. Forensic scientists also start out as forensic laboratory technicians and after developing those skills, advance to crime scene technicians. Advancements in science and technology continue to improve the accuracy and importance of crime scene evidence in prosecuting criminals and defending the accused. Training to be a forensic scientist will put you on the front line of this interesting and necessary analysis. ***
